Seriously,

The hours pilots get on with is all a function of who's available during the hiring cycle. When I got on 5 years ago, most new hires had 4000-5000 hours. By the end of the hiring cycle, it was more like 2000.

Jazz never just "hired" college grads. The top students from each college got an award of a interview with Jazz and some were hired. I believe Jazz has stopped this award though.

Got a friend just graduated, ink still drying on the MIFR, and he has an interview this week with Jazz... I suspect the program is still on.

Yes the "interview" and sim eval program was always in place. Doesn't mean they will be hired this time around. We will just have to wait and see what management decides to do with their infinite wisdom.

I have to say, if the company decides to hire from the program when there is qualified, experienced pilots out there, I will be pushing for min hiring requirement in our next contract. It's one thing when there are none wanting the job, but a completely different thing if there are. Nothing against the grads but this program basically says, experience not required, even though some of the captains have said it's like flying SPIFR for the first while. There are companies who have had a min hour clause in their CA and I will push for one, even if I have to join the LEC or MEC to do it.

The other side of that is that the company could very well say that, "Well, we can get grads straight out of college to sit in the right seat, so why should we pay you any more in the upcoming negotiations?"

Not the position that I would take - but one that is conceivable...

That's what they're trying to do under the guise of pilot shortage. It's disrespectful of the experience I came in with and the bottom line is, the captains who ultimately have to fly with them, will have to draw a line a say,"no way no more". I don't know if any have complained to the union or company, but I've heard the complaints and truthfully the word is the workload is very much increased. You can put them in the sim for 500 hours, it won't change the fact there is NO real world experience. As realistic as the sim is, it's not the same, there's no risk of injury or death, just bruised ego's if you fu#k up.

The college program is definitely still happening, seeing as I'm in Toronto right now as part of it. Will anything come of it? I doubt it, I've been applying like crazy trying to find a job elsewhere. I do have no real world experience, so no, I won't be a good fit in an airline at this point, but thankfully I've got lots of motivation to prove people wrong if the opportunity arises. As for pay and the strike, just because someone lacks experience doesn't mean they'll accept less money on principal. /Rant.

I like your attitude .. but the point isn't whether or not you'd accept lower pay for lack of experience. It comes down the the fact all FO's would be under the same blanket. The company doesn't wanna pay more than present wages for 250hr wonders. So in turn all FO's would suffer. This is all hypothetically speaking of course, and with a 99% strike vote .. I don't forsee this happening .. instead you'll gain with us.

There is no ill will toward any of the college folks .. please keep that in mind. If you're the lucky few .. fantastic .. you got the world by the nuts. But please read some of the previous post in other threads. The north will not let you down .. you will have fun .. and you will learn a ton!

Cheers.

Yes, they do a sim eval on you in a Dash-8 in either Vancouver or Toronto.

When I had 400 hours I thought I would be ready for Jazz.

I got my first right seat job on a navajo and when I pushed those throttles up for the first time, the turbos spooled up at different speeds and there I was zigg zagging down the runway and I instantly knew this was a necessary step in becoming a more confident and experienced pilot.

I wouldn't change anything in my career to this point. I had a blast up north, met some really awesome and experienced pilots. Flew with many different Capt.'s and F/O's. So I saw these experiences from both sides of the console.

I wouldn'y change flying that Navajo for anything. Theres still lots to learn, so no application to Jazz quit yet, but maybe next hiring wave!

That makes sense, and is right in line with Porter.

Perhaps my first post, but irrelevant to me.

For general info, I was hired at Jazz two years ago with 1045 hours (CPL w/IATRA), 800 multi-engine turbine, and been flying the Dash-8 in YVR ever since. So really, the time requirements are irrelevant.

Just keep applying.

And on a small side note, and not picking any fights, but the entire '45 new hires in YYZ', as mentioned above, is, in my mind, an interview tactic. Perhaps you don't want to go to YYZ? Don't worry about it, there's nothing you can do about this number. Even when you get hired, you might get bumped out of your awarded base.

The fact of the matter is, your interviewer doesn't know. Management and your YYZ ALPA representative don't know until they walk into the room with 'the numbers'. That number comes from the Manager of Ops Resource Planning. As mentioned, reinstatement rights will be the key factor here.

I'd guess that the amount of valid Jazz information on AvCanada is about 20%. Thanks to those posting real, factual information.
