Are you going istp? Red Bull gave me free tickets 'cause apparently I post about Red Bull on my blog a whole lot. You wanna meet up? I'm trying to get my boss to come so we can take the jet instead of driving down like animals, but either way, Lisa and I and a couple of pals will be there for both days.

I will be there the whole time with bells on.

The problem is that I have so many possibilities of where I could go to party that weekend.

Here's some skinny for other people to know about:

Red Bull wants a BUNCH of people out at the AIRPORT for the final ceremonies. There will be jumbotrons and grandstands out on the apron on Sunday to check things out. Go through the Windsor Flying Club and say, "I wanna sit in the stands." Thats FREE. You get to see the planes coming and going. And you get to hang with the pilots and mechanics afterwards.

This is the email I got:

The members, families and friends of the WFC, CH2A and EAA are cordially invited to view the Red Bull Air Races from the Pit area in front of the Windsor Flying Club on SUNDAY JUNE 6, 2020 from 1100hrs till the races and presentations are over.

Grandstands will be set up in front of a huge jumbotron so that you will be able to see the races, live and in colour on the Detroit River.....in addition, you will be able to see the aircraft departing and arriving the pit area on their way to/from the Detroit River. Refreshments will be provided, NO CHARGE AND ADMISSION IS FREE.

Upon completion of the races at approx 1600hrs, you are invited to gather round the stage in the pit area where the winning pilots will be awarded their medals.....Red Bull would love a large, live audience for the medal awards, which will be telecast live and archived......you may see yourself on TV for months.......!!!!

I will email you with details regarding parking areas, entry point to the field, and accreditation procedures within the next couple of days.

(that was indirectly from the big cheese at the WFC)

I might get in shit for posting this, but I'll remove it if requested. Hey, you're all my friends!

I might or might not be there. I'll be the guy with the shoulder-blade-length brown long hair and the black baseball cap with no logo on it. Just say, "Hi ISTP!" I'm not sure if there is a beer tent at the airport. I'm thinking "no". But will let you all know as I get info.

The bars I frequent are the Loop/Pogo's/The Coach and Horses, Milk Cafe, The Pourhouse, and I will let you in on the gem of all gems of restaurants- God I might be shot for this. ACAPULCO DELIGHT. It's a dump owned by Chinese dudes, but they make OK Mexican food at OK prices with a view of the river. Uh no, I just talked about Fight Club.

And to save you some searching on Avcanada, here's my original post on the subject.

Hey are you from Windsor? I'm born and raised... (now a Toronto ex-pat) Got my PPL at WFC, and had worked as a bartender at several places downtown for about 6 years. I've always hit the Loop on Sundays, Jay is a buddy who will fill a pint glass up with a concoction of booze.. you must know about the Double Mud!

I'll be down for the weekend, doing the boat cruise on Sunday, so won't be able to hit the airport, but not yet sure what to do on Saturday, definitely going by the flying club at some point to say hi to the guys/gals.

Cheers! Have fun!!!

The Wife and I have tix for Sunday, but the Wx is looking like poo... Anyone know what happens if it's raining? Will they still compete if it's VFR underneath, in rain?

Yeah, the weather looks a little yucky, but you never know...

Oh, and I found out a bit more about Sunday at the airport.

No beer tent, the WFC and CH2A will be barbecuing up some dogs and hamburgers. Parking is at National Auto Rad on Airport Road off Walker road. There will be a couple of security checkpoints to go through, and they're really looking for people that are friends of the CH2A, EAA, and WFC.

Bring a cooler if you want, and you can bring some chairs if you want. There will be no booze permitted. You know the drill- booze airside=not good.

I have no idea about what the weather minimums are for these guys. Oh well, bring an umbrella and bar hop if you have to.

Let's cross our fingers, folks! I'll be down there tonight. WOO HOO!!

Had biscuits and gravy for breakfast, then walked down to the river to see some guys zipping through the pylons practicing. Very cool.

Am resting my liver until tonight.

Will keep you posted.

Update on Sunday at the airport- basically, it will be almost impossible for the general public to get in. You gotta be friends or family of someone from the local EAA chapter, WFC or CH2A. I've been told that there will be representatives from those 3 organizations at security checkpoints and if they don't know you or have heard of you, or have the membership card, then well, you're out of luck. They are recommending that you show up with one of those members, or have the member tell security that you're cool in advance. Red Bull's concern isn't really so much about security as it is for limited seating capacity. It's pretty big, but not big enough for everyone. Sorry if I got your hopes up to see the closing ceremonies, but the race downtown should be cool.

My liver is holding out so far after a warm up last night. Just like the racers, I will be giving it my all today and hope to perform like a champion (at the beer tent, not flying.)

Yeah, Matt Hall was a touch off his game yesterday.

Sorry about not getting back to you about parking suggestions, AUGER9. I've been busy. Just do the best you can, and don't be afraid of walking. It's pretty hard to get lost in Windsor. Just remember- the U.S.A. is to the north.

The qualifying rounds were cool yesterday and the Tillsonburg Harvard guys put on a great display after the Red Bull guys were done too. Lots of great flying yesterday by everyone with perfect weather- just overcast enough so you didn't bake in the sun, light winds. Nice.

MASSIVE thundershowers last night though- I had to pack in the bar hopping a little earlier than I would have liked, but my liver is thanking me for that this morning. :)

It's pretty windy and gusty now, but hopefully that'll calm down a bit for race time. Not sure what their weather minima are. And according to the TAF, we shouldn't get any thunderstorms till just after the race. I'm gonna be out at the airport because of my special V.I.P. status with a small posse. Having a few chill out beers when we get home, then early to bed, early to rise for the long drive back to Sudbury.

To the rest of you, you are cleared to party! SMOKE ON!

I watched a few minutes of it on Sunday on TV.

Really dumb question: why no 1/2 cuban-8? The entire route was flat. Why no beautiful, soaring high-G verticals, like everywhere else in the world?

My guess. The organizers have to decide on a flat or vertical course based on weather. If they add verticals they may not be able to fly the course if there are little cruddy clouds at 1000 AGL or so. While a flat course can be run more easily even with low crud. Kind of like the flat airshow routine v.s. vertical.

Its too bad because the verticals are so beautiful and frankly way safer than those 10G turns at 3 feet. Like you said .. you just fall up!
