A Cessna 120/140 ground looped in a quartering tailwind. There was a lot of convective activity that day and the time of day was mid-afternoon.
I think it would be a fair assumption to say that it was due to a thermal.
The pilot is ok but it sounds like he was a bit shaken up.

How can you blame a thermal? would't the ground loop have been caused by opting for the quartering tailwind?
The only three things a wingman should ever say: 1. "Two's up" 2. "You're on fire" 3. "I'll take the fat one"

Somebody explain what a thermal is to him.

Why was a cessna 120 or 140 landing with a quartering tailwind?
We're all here, because we're not all there.

I think what they're saying is that winds can change quickly when there's convective activity around, and I agree, I'd bet the pilot was approaching with a headwind. Ever notice the windsock spinning around on one of those days?
