Hey everyone, I will be moving to Montreal in 3 weeks and as I currently have never worked in the aviation industry in Canada would be great to meet up with some of you folk for a beer.
Random post I know but would be great to share stories of the industry and have a few lite ales at the same time.....
I am a British 28 year old, worked in the UK for 7 years on commercial a/c and have been out in Switzerland for the past 4 years working on the corprate stuff.
Look forward to hopefully meeting some of you guys and getting the low down on aviation in Canada straight from the horses mouth and not just from AvCanada because although things are bad with the industry in Canada, there not that bad are they?!
very very bad idea!!! m-jet, air canada, bell textron, bombardier, g/e, pratt and wittney, have laid off ppl if not more companies that i haven't heard of... i moved to montreal to work for exeltech aerospace about 2 and a half years ago, one of the larger rmo's of this province, they declared bankruptcy about 4 months ago.... they owned 2 fairly good sized hangers with about, i'm estimating 1000 employees not too sure about the number..... there must be about 2000 aircraft mechanics without work in this province, its a bloody nightmare the industry is saturated with mechanics! i haven't seen an opening in 6 months!!!! imagine the amount of resumes that will come flowing in!!
i will give you my best advice, if you want work... ontario, or british columbia, alot of helicopter work up in alberta with the oil industry.... i'm seriously thinking of moving out of this province myself, good luck.... hopefully my advice helped you out a little!
Hi Adam,
as av-mec has mentionned there's no rosy picture in Montreal.
Having said that, BBD seems to be going to have to recall all the skilled people they laid off in recent months/years. Some of those people, fed up of being repeatedly laid off will not come back as many of them have already found something else ( I personnally know a sheetmetal guy who packed for a contract work in Australia just 1 week after being terminated at BBD), the majority probably will return but definitely not all, and there lies your slim hope. Plus maybe -just maybe- they will begin recruiting for the CSeries by the end of the year.
Have everything prepared for your Transport Canada licence.
I just happen to be blessed enough not to be among the redundant. I work here and will be glad to have a little chat with you when you're here. Just PM me.
Bombardier Aerospace Announces its Plan to Acquire ExelTech Hangar Written by Bombardier Inc Wednesday, 09 June 2010 June 9, 2010 — Montréal
Aerospace
Bombardier announced today the acceptance of its offer to purchase the Saint-Laurent facilities of ExelTech Aerospace Inc. following the latter’s bankruptcy. The acquisition will increase Bombardier’s Global Completion Centre (GCC) capabilities for its Global 5000 and Global Express XRS business jets. The world-class GCC is a fully integrated completion facility with the capability to define, engineer, fabricate, certify and deliver customized interior installations. Bombardier’s GCC is known for its superior quality and workmanship, as well as for its customer-centric focus.
Bombardier’s Global business jets are recognized throughout the industry as the ultimate in design and performance. “The acquisition of the ExelTech facility positions us to better serve our customers with the highest quality completions for our flagship Global business aircraft,” said Steve Ridolfi, President, Bombardier Business Aircraft.
Bombardier forecasts that the 115,000 sq.-ft. (10,684 sq.-m.) facility will be operational by the fall of 2010.
The acquisition of this facility from RSM Richter Inc., in its capacity of receiver of ExelTech Aerospace Inc., is subject to closing conditions including obtaining the approval of the Superior Court of Quebec, as is customary for this type of transaction.
That makes happy reading conehead, lets hope for all you guys in montreal looking for work (j'espere moi aussi) that it all works out and its happily ever after! Having spent the last 4 years on the globals and challenger series that would be right up my street and would be the best possible outcome if Bombardier take over the hangars and it all kicks off.
Actually, you are moving to the "Other Canada", the french one. Our dogs bark in french. Even the wind blows in french here but most of us are bilingual!
Send me a PM when you are around. We'll try to organize to meet.
Au plaisir de se rencontrer bientôt!
Giles

Flying an aircraft and building a guitar are two things that are easy to do bad and difficult to do right
Hey Mihai, i'm not a pilot by profession although have a few hours on P38's...... In my initial post I forgot to mention that I am a maintenance engineer/mechanic but would be great to meet new people in the industry like I said so more people the better as far as I am concerned. As for everyone else who posted on my link, will PM you all when I get there and hopefully your not all pilots. Didn't think I would get many posts from pilots in the maintenance section of AvCanada.
Thanks again for all the remarks and hope to see some of you soon.
