Never underestimate a goober's attachment to his lawn mower. It seems 47-year-old Chester Staples of Palestine, Texas sold a riding lawnmower to 35-year-old Matthew Polly. But, alas, Polly turned deadbeat and stopped making payments...
So Staples went to his house to repossess it. He was rummaging around outside when Polly went out to confront him. The men began to argue.
Apparently both believed a few hundred dollars and a lawn mower was a life or death beef. Because they're goobers. So they both pulled out handguns and opened fire from within a few feet of each other.
Staples proved a beneficiary of gooberific aim. He was shot in the left and hand and recovered at a Tyler hospital.
Polly, unfortunately, took five bullets from close range. One pierced his heart and he died at the scene.
Since Staples went armed to the home, knowing there could be trouble, he's now been charged with murder. Police also believe he's not expected to recoup the tardy payments for his lawnmower. (Special thanks to reader Lauren for the tip.)
