Envision Edmonton (City Centre airport)

Post by Widgeon Guy »

It's time for all you people in aviation across Canada to make yourselves heard and try and save an airport. The politicians would like to take a valuable down town airport that cities around the world would love to have and turn it into some kind of eco housing project. I am not against eco housing but I am against money hungry politicians. Help save this airport, jobs and historical site. Thousands of flights serving this country have been out or in this terminal and now some clowns what to close it.

It maybe your airport next.

I believe the same jackasses who got rid of the electric buses that they say was dirty power and Vancouver bought them. They sold the power plant that they said was losing money or to costly to run to Americans, so Edmonton is buying power for more and that US company is doing great at Edmonton tax payers expense. Saskatoon and Calgary have down town airports that can handle the Medivacs, and they will still get to the hospital sooner. I would say Edmonton better wake up and get rid of the jackasses they have running the place.

in critical cases can STARS not get the patient to the hospital just as fast?

Hate to play on the other side of the fence here, but....
Most MEDEVAC's into CYXD are not of the time critical nature, they are often bringing patients down for tests, and procedures not available in their home health districts. When a patient is first ordered a MEDEVAC flight he/she must be stabilized to a level that the Paramedic's can sign for them to transport. If they are too unstable they do not fly immediately. STAR's helicopters respond to the scene of the accident, and thus handle the highly critical patients, but they also land directly at the hospital ...Obviously , there can be a few exceptions in every case. My point is that the arguement for keeping CYXD open because of the MEDEVAC service is a bit of a red herring. Furthermore, it may even be faster if a critical patient is flown directly into YEG..transferred on the ramp to a waiting helicopter and flown directly to the hospital...

I disagree tailgunner I would say the ratio is about 70 - 30 for patient transfers. But saving those lives of the 30% should be a priority. Edmonton is home to a lot of transplants, burn units, sick babies (yes Calgary has childrens hospital) but there are still the specialty doctors in Edmonton. Pretty sure the hospital was there before all the development around it. Some politican back in the day probably thought it would be a great idea to build close to the airport for the people. Know the people say they don't want it. Then move. Calgary's airport has housing development going north of the field, in about 10 years everyone will be complaining about an airport built by there house.

You're not going to win friends and influence people by stretching the truth.

I have lived in Saskatoon for 10 years now. Please point out our downtown airport, because I've missed it.

Look I'm on your side but stick to the facts and don't twist things. We're a city of 220K. The airport is at the edge of the city. When you have an airport on the edge of a city of 220K, it is almost always close to downtown.

Good luck btw. :)

I used to live in McNab Park so I can speak with authority when I say the airport is not downtown.

While STAR's provides a useful service, it should be noted that they also use aircraft that have rather short range. So the critical patient being flown out of say Kirby or somewhere similar isn't going to get helped by our rotor wing friends. We live in a big province and there will be a need for fixed wing for a long time to come. Going to YEG is going to impact some lives in a very negative way. However, at the end of the day money talks and there are enough well funded and well placed developers drooling over the airport space that this will be a hard battle to win.

Totally agree. I'm hoping the courts can step in, notwithstanding the failed injunction recently. I understand there are lawsuits in progress.

Where is COPA ??

Nice work by the crew: :smt023

There were some tense moments at the City Centre Airport Wednesday morning. Emergency crews jumped into action as they prepared for an airplane to make an emergency landing.

Around 11:30 a.m. what appears to be a medivac aircraft made a safe emergency landing after the pilot reported some engine problems. The pilot was able to navigate through the problems and land the plane safely.

CTV News has learned there were six passengers on board the aircraft at the time of the emergency landing. Ground ambulances were waiting near the tarmac, but it appears no one was injured in the incident.
