Small plane crashes near Quebec City airport

The Gazette June 23, 2010 7:36 AM

MONTREAL - A small plane with seven people on board crashed Wednesday morning near Jean Lesage airport in Quebec City.

Five passengers and two crew members were aboard the Aéropro King Air 100 plane when it crashed and burst into flames shortly after takeoff.

At least four people were killed in the crash, LCN reports.

The pilot notified the airport that he was experiencing engine problems shortly before the plane crashed at 6 a.m. in a field near the airport.

Municipal firefighters, airport emergency crews, ambulances and police are on the scene.

Aéropro offers private charter flights from airports in Quebec City, Sherbrooke, Sept-îles and St. Hubert.

More details to follow.

Seven people were killed when a small plane crashed after takeoff early Wednesday morning at the Jean-Lesage airport, outside Quebec City.

The twin-engine plane had trouble at takeoff and crashed in a field north of the airport around 6 a.m. ET on Wednesday, according to early reports from authorities.

It burst into flames, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky.

The airplane was en route to Sept-Îles.

The Jean-Lesage airport is about 20 kilometres from Quebec City.

RIP :(

I'm starting to feel like I'm cursed. When I'm in Toronto, two planes crash at Buttonville, and now that I am in Quebec, it's followed me here. It's been a bad couple of weeks for Canadian Aviation.

Stay safe out there.

Here is the recording for those interested in listening. Pilot is speaking about the problem after 1:00.
http://jspallanzani.free.fr/skycanada/a ... _crash.mp3

Aircraft is cleared for takeoff from runway 30, then pilot advises there is a problem with the right engine and he has to come back for landing. ATC tells him he is number one for runway 30 and he can turn at his discretion. Pilot then requests emergency services because "they are unable to climb". That is the last transmission from the aircraft, the rest of the recording is the tower controller speaking to Red 5 and saying he can see a big fire ball and smoke to the NW.

Fly safe

I found the fire crew a little annoying, always asking "any word on how many people on board?". He was told 7, not clear initially if that included the crew. Then the tower tells him it's confirmed 7 including the crew. They proceed to ask him a couple more times how many people on board. My sympathies to family and friends. You just never know when your # will be drawn. The pilot seemed so nonchalant and in a good mood on departure, little did he know. So sad. I was working terminal when a Mooney crashed on departure from YQB about 6-ish years ago. 4 died in that one. It affects you, no doubt. :(

terrible news. i guess it's just a reminder to everyone that we always have to expect the worst every time we take off and always have some kind of plan B going on in our heads. sounds like this guy had the worst kind of problem at the worst moment with the worst set of flying conditions possible.. really sucks.

Sympathies to the friends and families of the deceased and the gang at Aeropro, on their loss.

Weather was good in QB this AM, 0600 sequence was 8200 over/25, 19/12, 0905, 2992. He took off on 30, it don't whether whether he turned right or left after the engine malfunction. The Captain was from Manitoba, the F/O was a local guy. :(

I heard about this wayyyy after the fact on my local evening news and the footage and pics they had really speak to how badly this a/c hit the ground. May everyone affected find peace and may the passengers and crew Rest In Peace.

As for the audio recording of the PIC talking with the Tower, he's ability to remain calm and keep himself collected really speaks for this man's experience and talent flying this a/c. Nothing he did (in my opinion) caused this a/c to crash.

RIP - to all the crew and passengers and respective families!!!

A tragic day. I'll pay the crew a moment of silence.

Autofeather is an option on the 100 and none of the ones I flew had it.

My heart goes out to the friends and family...

Aircraft involved photo was C-FGIN a Beechcraft A100 built in 1973 and in service with Aeropro since 1993.

Candors from today's accident.
