Must be getting old, the terminology that the kids these days, like my nieces, is totally mind boggling. Takes alot of imagination to figure some of it out.

I'm surprised they haven't been flooding in, maybe everyone is afraid of creating a rift?
Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not, knows no release from the little things; knows not the livid loneliness of fear, nor mountain heights where bitter joy can hear the sound of wings.

How about, "I just passed my flight test and got my privates!"

On the topic of hang{a}(e)rs, here's one that nearly everybody gets wrong:into the blue wrote:A hanger:
Hanged: "Hanged" is the proper usage for the past tense in the corporal punishment sense of the word.
Saddam Hussein was hanged.
Almost everyone says hung. While he may have been hung, or even well-hung in other regards, he was definately hanged, not hung (to death).

With regards to the use of fancy words, a little goes a long way. Like paprika in goulash, flat fifths in a blues solo, or RTV on a mating surface. When you use too much you either don't know what you are doing, or you are trying to compensate for lack in other areas...

When I was writing for a newspaper, I was quite disappointed to be told by my Editor that I needed to write to a person with no greater than grade 8 education.
Luckily for me, I only worked for the newsprint business for about a month before going back to radio & TV.
By comparison, newspapers were like turtles in a Nascar race compared to broadcasting.

That's why I read British newspapers for world news. Not only are their articles well written and precise, but they are often full of subtleties that wouldn't even by noticed by your average North American reader. The Old Fogducker wrote: When I was writing for a newspaper, I was quite disappointed to be told by my Editor that I needed to write to a person with no greater than grade 8 education.

Just allow George Carlin to explain and it will all be understood:

And some of you may even remember Tony Orlando in the "intro" (which is also not a word).
And here is some more.... Aviation related (after all this an aviation forum)

As long as we understand the Engrish language is a work in progress we can all get along....

So go out and have lots (or is that parcels) of fun with English as a second language.

Two I hate most:
#1: "Plane"; it's an airplane, aeroplane, aircraft but it's never a plane.
#2: "For free". Free is not a noun. You got it free of charge. You did not get it for free.

"For free" is common enough it is found in dictionaries. It may be considered informal or an idiom.ktcanuck wrote:Two I hate most:

If you are going to use a cliché, as least use the right words. For the record, it should be "for all intents and purposes".winds_in_flight_wtf wrote: Secondly, the F-35 for all intensive purposes supersedes the role of the F16 (land based).

Also want to say thanks to quite a few people on here (many of whom I do not know personally) who passed along leads, it was very much appreciated!

I've always hated hearing "plane". It sounds amateurish, sloppy and ignorant.
Many people who do know what they're talking about use it.
However, if somebody in the media, or some moron being interviewed by the media who knows absolutley jack $hit about the subject is being asked to pontificate on an aviation matter, said moron will doubtlessly say: "plane"...
(Hear Ye: Big-Titted Blonde bimbo yapping on a huge piece of bubble gum..
Invariably, the bubble-head will not say "airplane" or "aircraft".Blonde Bimbo wrote:"The Plane made a loud noise and like fire and smoke came out of the plane and it nose-dived and I'm like sure the plane's engine stalled and stuff."
Oh - and American. In addition to all of the above, it sounds American.
As aviation professionals and non-veterans of 'Nam, it is one place where all of us can easily demonstrate our profesionalism, make the distinction and use the correct nomenclature.
I would like to take this oportunity to ixnay "chopper" and "heelo'" from the vernacular as well.
If it were up to me.
