I wish there were a correlation between high visibility airlines operating in the triangle and consistent corporate profitability.

Intair, Royal, Jetsgo, Porter etc have had great profile, wonderful marketshare, great frequency but their losses have been crippling to the point of extinction.

Porter alone has lost $40m+ buying marketshare and visibility.

I don't know of too many businesses that can constantly run double digit negative operating margins and stay in business in perpetuity...

I first became aware of this aspect of the business when Canadian Airlines International was formed and I followed their performance.

It never fails to amaze me how these companies continue to find financial backing with huge losses, quarter after quarter, after quarter.

If you were about to try and find a place to invest your life's savings, would you put it all into airline stocks?

Toronto and Montreal are NOT eastern Canada... Not in my opinion anyway...

So great this likely means Westjet will cut more Atlantic service to fly more planes in the corridor...

Just from stuff Saretzky (sp) has been saying about 50% domestic market, and that globe and mail response to our visiblility. He has experiance with smaller airframes and I assume sees the value in them. Yes I understand the public perception of propeller driven aircraft but in short haul scenarios they are better to run than a 737 (cheaper, faster). We have the facilities to maintain the aircraft and as of late they have been hiring more diverse backgrounds when it comes to maintenace people. The biggest hurdle will be the pilots association, due to training and well perception again. The Q does need a longer runway than smaller aircraft but when its making money running half full its hard to discount.

What makes you think they make money when they are half full?

I should have qualified my statement about Saretzky: if he makes it to two years, then I can see it happening. If he needs to spend time with his family before then well....

Cost per hour wise, It looks like the 737 300-700 is $1993.00, and th -800 is $1583.00 where as the Q400 is $1298.00 So just a quick look and my 50% isn't too far off. I think these numbers are old but I just got off night shift so I'll come up with something better later on. Here are the links though.

Those are interesting costs - eye opening.
Anybody know the operating costs of the Embraer 175 and 190?
That would be an interesting comparison to the 737-600/700 and 800.
Would the 175 and 190 be a better fleet addition than the Q?

Ask Virgin Blue about adding Jungle Jets to an NG fleet. See if you can find Brett Godfrey, WestJet board member and CEO of Virgin Blue.

My two cents: If they were a good idea, they'd be here already.

It costs way less to operate a mini van than a Greyhound Bus. Have you ever wondered why Greyhound hasn't switched to fleet of mini-van's?

They can't find enough soccer mums to drive/operate the entire fleet if they switched to mini vans.

Looks like they're going to work on this...

WestJet exec to set up shop in Toronto

WestJet is shipping one of its executives to Toronto to increase the Calgary carrier’s profile in the critical central Canadian market.

Vice-president of sales Duncan Bureau starts work in Toronto in August.

“With WestJet’s continued expansion into the business and corporate markets, this move reflects how much WestJet values the travel trade and our corporate relationships in Central Canada,” WestJet said in a statement.

The move comes less than a week after CEO Gregg Saretsky, speaking to investors in New York, admitted Canada’s No. 2 carrier is little known in the Toronto area.

“We have clearly some work to be done in Eastern Canada,” Saretsky said at the time. That job is now up to Bureau, who joined WestJet in 2002.

In Toronto, WestJet faces stiff competition from Porter, a regional carrier based in Canada’s largest city.
