How can you tell which one is the pilot when you walk into a bar?....Don't worry he will come up and tell you.
Re: Westjet passenger attempts to open door at FL370
How do the B737 systems work to prevent this from happening? I assume (bleed air???) seals the exits while the aircraft is pressurized?
Re: Westjet passenger attempts to open door at FL370
For anyone who does not know it is completely "impossible" for anyone to open an aircraft door which is an inward opening "plug type" ( which is the 737) once the aircraft is pressurized to any degree. She could break the handle right off and that door would not even budge.. yes it is pressurized by bleed air and, once closed, the door is part of the pressure vessel so until you release all of the pressure it will not move..
Re: Westjet passenger attempts to open door at FL370
The doors are all plug design and would be impossible to open when the aircraft is pressurized. (take off to landing) The emergency exits have electrical locks that engage when the aircraft is airborne making them all but impossible to open in flight.ywgflyboy wrote:How do the B737 systems work to prevent this from happening? There was no way that lady could have opened a door thus no danger other than the physical struggle to subdue her.

I bet she's going to sue WJ because her luggage is lost in YWG. I hope she's going to find it in Sham town

Could have been a lot worse! She could have tried to open it at FL380!
No trees were harmed in the transmission of this message. However, a rather large number of electrons were temporarily inconvenienced.
Re: Westjet passenger attempts to open door at FL370
Maybe she got tired of the PA jokes and had to leave. All joke aside, well handled by the crew.
Re: Westjet passenger attempts to open door at FL370
She should be shot.......
...out of a canon into the sun.

Re: Westjet passenger attempts to open door at FL370
They should have let her open the door so she could jump.
Re: Westjet passenger attempts to open door at FL370
Was she drunk?Who let her fly in this conditions?
Re: Westjet passenger attempts to open door at FL370
what condition are you refering to?YYC wrote:Was she drunk?Who let her fly in this conditions?

Well, when was about 2 or 3 years old, I apparently tried to jump off the top of a ferris wheel that had broken down and trapped my dad and I at the top.
I can't say I remember it it, except by his oft-times repeated recollection.
So, she must have been pretty freaked to flip out like that.

Well, a good punh in the nose and a couple of tiewraps could have done the trick. Why land in Winnipeg???
Company policy?

Success in life is when the cognac that you drink is older than the women you drink it with.

Should gave gone the extra few miles to Steinbach where she could go do some skydiving.Expat wrote:Well, a good punh in the nose and a couple of tiewraps could have done the trick. Why land in Winnipeg???

Personally I think anybody who tried to do what she did is not mentally sound. A sad and unfortunate event that posed no hazard to the aircraft and was quickly and competantly handled by the cabin crew. I hope this person gets the help they so desperately need.

Re: Westjet passenger attempts to open door at FL370
I notice on the news reports that their was no statement by Westjet that the door is impossible to open when the aircraft is pressurized. My rough math 48" x 96" x 8 PSID = over 16 tons of force.
She might have been able to get the gates to crack (the parts of the door on the top and bottom that pull in so it will fit though the hole), but even that is unlikely.

Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

So, what you're trying to tell me is that when the FA's say the smoking section is out on the wing, they are LYING to us?!palebird wrote:For anyone who does not know it is completely "impossible" for anyone to open an aircraft door which is an inward opening "plug type" ( which is the 737) once the aircraft is pressurized to any degree. Re: Westjet passenger attempts to open door at FL370
I was just doing the same thing... came up with minimum door size of 30 x 65 on the right side and 34 x 72 on the left. Max dif. is 9.1 PSID; so even on the smaller right side doors, the pressure holding it closed is about 17,550 lbs! the left side doors are over 22,000 lbs!iflyforpie wrote:I notice on the news reports that their was no statement by Westjet that the door is impossible to open when the aircraft is pressurized. O,yes,I am sorry...
Police are still investigating the woman's odd behaviour, and did not say if mental illness or suicidal feelings played any role. They said there's no indication she was drunk or high on drugs. Police do not consider the incident to be related to terrorism.

Re: Westjet passenger attempts to open door at FL370
Here is a thought. I too, have had to put up with all the Westjet witticisms that are really funny only to Westjet cabin crew, but I have heard them make that smoking section is out on the wing comment.
This woman might have a great defense in claiming that she was simply trying to follow the instructions of the cabin crew and go out on the wing for a smoke.
I am available at a reasonable price as an expert defence witness.

I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming in terror like his passengers...

If mostlyharmless was one of the drivers on board, I don't blame her for wanting to get off.
