...just flew in tonight AND I have to say that the good folks @ CYYZ centre & tower/ground were amazing. I was expecting a $hit show...but I was SO impressed by the high level of service. Voices never even waivered...like everything was normal ops...even when on final 3 "black choppers" were crossing my flight path was handled with ease.
Jus' saying...you don't hear enough when it goes ALL to plan. Anyway, that's my experience!
Nice job YYZ ATC...now, can you do anything about the traffic on the 401/403?

I drove in to Hope Aero today on the north end of YYZ and was expecting a whole bunch of problems. Saw one cop and that was it. No traffic on the 409/Airport Rd/Derry, the only hitch was that the 427 S was closed and I had to make a 2 min detour.
Was on the 427 around 8 ish going to the 409 east and saw the three choppers also. I actually saw them by the 427 and the 407 area. On my way back to brampton on 7 and 50 I saw the same three heading north and another trailing.
I tried taking a pic with my blackberry but it was a fail.

Nice post! Hopefully there are some YYZ controllers floating around on here who can read this and pass it on to their colleagues.
They did very well considering the number of "Stensens" / Griffons CP140s et al in the vicinity. I think one crew even found Waldo hiding in the bushes!
So what will happen if you try and take off from YYZ without the G20 clearance? Will they let you go and violate you, or just deny you a clearance? Who has to get the clearance?
They did well. It was busy this afternoon coming in to YYZ, could barely get a word in, but then Rog stepped in and things went even smoother. A rare compliment to YYZ from me.
Now if only the ground dummies could get over having to switch you to tower or apron frequencies. That would cut down on so much radio chatter. Yes, Im getting to the end of D taxiway. I can switch myself over to tower on my own like I do at the other 50 airports I fly to!!!!!!!!!

"ROG" IS the $HIT!
SO glad he's back in the YYZ area...not because everyone else is sub-par, no no no...but because I kinda feel like a groupie at a rock concert when he throws his "RAAAAhhg" @ me over the radio-stage.
I giggle like a school girl...well it's (almost) like a scream in the flight deck! My noise cancelling drowns out most of the high db's!

Oh my gosh he is still there? During my all too brief "glory" days with Royal/C3, I remember hearing him and thinking... "All is well with the universe" while he was directing traffic.
Yep...they've had C-GCFR for many years now. Used to be used for river pollution and ice pratrols and at one point was operated by First Air on TC's behalf
The YYZ ATC folks generally always do a great job. Gotta remember that they have to work within the bounds of all the GTAA B.S., so sometimes it may not make sense to us in the pointy end.
Lots of new voices on the air too lately- nice job all around IMHO.

yes...but he says it like "one-seven-ZERAHHH"
There are but a few worldwide like him that makes it a pleasure to work with (at least from this pilots opinion).
A good controller will have 50 airplanes under his control and make you feel like you're the only one in the air. A 'not-so' good one will have 1 airplane on his/her screen...but treat you and make you feel like there's 50.
To close the loop on YYZ/G8/G20...THANKS EVERYONE...you made it awesome!
I will make sure "Rog" reads this thread. He only has a couple of years left though so get ready to storm those barricades.
From the ATC perspective the G20/G8 made life interesting (especially with the weather last week!). You pilots probably noticed on departure that you were being given airway intercept headings more often than not (instead of the waypoints). On a couple of routings (V265) this meant we had less room to work with. The idea was to have everyone on course within 15 DME of Toronto. Not so easy on the morning V252 V265 rush or the evening eastbounds.
Inbounds were less affected unless the "eye in the sky Orion" wanted altitudes over downtown that affected descent into the arrival box (23/24s). We had a separate sector open to deal with all the military and surveillance traffic. Arrival and departure only worked what got in the way. The callsign heard often was "stetson".
Good to read the compliments for once. We try...and even when we f*** up we do so professionally.
Who's for having a runway change 3 or 4 times?....anyone? Anyone???

The sighs of exasperation coming from the AC crews are what make my day. I guess the "honeymoon" from all the "new-blood" they hired is over.
Thanks for posting
The best part of my day is listening to AC Mini-bus drivers whining.

Used to think that way about AC drivers until a few years back. Now the crown goes to one or two WJA guys in YYC. They sound either like they're about to cry or that their level of animation is one notch above being dead. Granted, they represent a very small minority.

Turn right/left heading XXX, vectors for the hell of it.

You should try that, and then you might cause a near-fatal runway incursion, just like those tools at Westjet did in KLAS a while back. Some airports use frequency changes as an indication to the next controller that the aircraft has been cleared to a certain point. So don't switch them on your own, hero.
