Airlines and larger hail while parked!
Sorry if this is a silly question, but when a storm with larger hail (golf ball or baseball size) rolls through the A/D and say there are 50 aircraft at the gates. What really happens to the aircraft? I am assuming they would get the crap beat out of them like a car, therefore would they be grounded, and if so for how long? Or do you just kick the tires after the storm passes load up and pour the coal to her?
Just passed my mind the other day after CYYC got punded with golf ball size hail!
Once again sorry for any stupid questions!

Re: Airlines and larger hail while parked!
I saw an episode of "Mythbusters" where they covered a car with golf-ball-like indentations, and then claimed after some trials that it had improved the car's economy. Maybe the airlines park their planes outside hoping they will get hailed on.
Just thought I'd get in here before someone gave you a sensible answer.
I for one suspect it's pretty catastrophic if the hail is big enough. Then again, believe it or not airliners are made with much thicker metal than cars are: maybe it doesn't bother them as much.
In conclusion, I don't have the slightest idea, I just like the sound of myself typing.

I'd think when the haul gets pressurized it would just pop those dents back out.Meatservo wrote:I saw an episode of "Mythbusters" where they covered a car with golf-ball-like indentations, and then claimed after some trials that it had improved the car's economy. Really? Cause when I haul ass the pressure doesn't force the ass to pop out.Lurch wrote:

After the storm clears, the much maligned, to some, overpaid, over priveleged engineers inspect the aircraft, and if dents or deformations are found, the structural repair manual is opened to the chapter on dents and skin damage limits, and the fun begins. Oh, and guess who gets to sign his life away before the moneymakers climb on.

Do the pilots beat you if you ever dare look them in the eyes?

Re: Airlines and larger hail while parked!
A hail storm on the ground is to be documented and the aircraft inspected as per the manufactures instructions before further flight. The big concern is damage to the composite parts such as spoilers, ailerons, elevators, rudder, etc. on newer generation aircraft. Damage may not be visible in composite parts and can significantly reduce the components strength and performance.lowlevel wrote:Sorry if this is a silly question, but when a storm with larger hail (golf ball or baseball size) rolls through the A/D and say there are 50 aircraft at the gates. Scroll down and you'll see what flying through a hail storm on climb out can do to a B737. This happened to an Easyjet departure out of Geneva. He was back on the ground 10 minutes later after an abusive ride.
