Real neat shots C-150 Pilot...

I have flown many hours in that Cat, the last time was 1986 when it was used for flying tourists out here in B.C.

Now you can look for pictures of the Dutch Cat in the same site, I believe there are some pictures of it taken at the Lleystad Airshow last summer, and also some pictiures of the Pitts PH PEP.

Maybe you will find them under the Aviodrome links?

Anyhow thanks for the pictures..

It's nice to see that there are some spotters that can see and tell the differance between a Catilina and a Canso.

" Catalina or Canso = Pig Boat or Swine Barge. "

No doubt all aircraft have been given lots of names :D , however I'm still waiting for bigred to tell us how to tell the difference between a Catalina and a Canso.....

...obviously bigred is a Canadian but what does he know that we don't about PBY's ???

the canso was a canadian built version of the consolidated catalina.
Kind of like the harvard built by Noorduyn. The Cat goes by the letter number combo PBY-5 and the canso goes by PBY-5A A meaning amphibious hence the wheels bolted to the side and tucked into the nose. These were the obvious differences I was shown when I was told the easy way to tell the 2 apart as well as the extra weight and hull modifactions required when adding landing gear.

Hi Bigred :

You are correct that the name Canso is a Canadian name given to PBY's built under contract in Canada by two Companies, Boeing in Vancouver and Vickers in Montreal.

However generally speaking the PBY is known around the world as a Catalina, which includes both the boat version and the amphibian version. If you were to call PBY a Canso anywhere outside of Canada you would get a blank stare as most people in aviation would not recognize that name.

By the way there were 36 flying boats built in Canada out of a total of 1854

And there were 184 amphibians built in Canada out of a total of 1418.

I only asked you how to tell the difference between a Canso and a Catalina by looking at a PBY, because it is impossible to tell the difference without checking the Log book to see where it was built.

I probably should not have mentioned this except I am so used to PBY's being called Catalinas or Cat for short that I have to stop and think when someone calls them a Canso, that of course is to be expected from you Canadians..

My licence is endorsed with a CV14 type rating. I believe this stands for Consolidated Vultee.

How does this fit into the scheme of things?

Thanks

I have no idea what it stands for, especially the 14....

My old ATPL had Consolidated PBY5A ....but the new one is like yours CV14......

The closest that I can come as a guess is it is TC speak dreamed up by one of their deep thinkers in a dark room jacking off and on the 14th stroke this description came to him... :smt023

Maybe CD can enlighten us..?

I can vouch for Cat on this... I said something about a Canso once to him and he looked at me like I had just beamed in...

As for the CV-14 yeah.. they are called that here for some reason, I just put PBY-5A in my logbook so if anyone ever wants to look at it they know what the heck I'm talking about but hey...

I think they were calling a C-46 a CW-21 or something to that effect now as well..WTF?
