Looking for DHC 6 Gurus

Post by Slipster »

Hey All,

Thanks for reading. I am looking to get switched onto info sources regarding the rebuild of VIN 009. Shes in Fiji and flies a bit crooked but still a beauty. I am just a pilot with no aviation diploma or engineering background so for those with a great wealth of knowledge any input for do's and donts would be appreciated. Who can I contact? What should I look for in a rebuild facility? What basic costs am I looking at for a complete overhaul including an upgrade to Dash 27's?

I will post this add on PPRune and the maintenance forum here. I have also contacted Viking to get some basic input as well. But I have read plenty on this forum and there are guys here who have really valuable knowledge and contacts. Again thanks for any input.

Vinaka,

D

You should contact Rocky Mountain Aircraft, ask for Mel he should be able to assist you, but if you're thinking about a rebuild project bring your checkbook, typically anything thats spent time in a warm marine environment will have some corrosion issues.

a quick guess is $3M. please let us know what you find out

the -20 have no value so you can use them as anchors and -27s are at a premium , new wings and a COMPLETE re build

actually it may be B.E.R and sold for parts-- you can buy a flyable used one for less than it will cost to re build.

Erwin Aero Airdrie AB
Altenrhein Avation, Switzerland, ask for Eric
Rocky Mtn AC as mentioned

Twin Otter serial number 9.

CF-UXE De Havilland
VH-TGT reserved registration but canceled
F-OCFJ delivered to Air Tahiti Jan 24/68
DQ-FEZ Sunflower - now Pacific Sun

The only older Twin Otter flying is Nasa's Glen Research Icing aircraft number 4 - N607NA photo.
Number 8 was flying until it's accident last year, don't know the status C-FCCE accident report and C-FCCE photo.

I would contact Micheal Bannock and ask for a reference. Maybe he can direct you?

http://www.wwaf.ca/contactus.htm

His Dad is Russell Bannock (Bannock Aerospace), Russ Bannock ex - CEO De Havilland, when he left in 1978, companies looking to sell their 100 series twin otters and buy new ones, Bannock Aerospace would buy the old one, and upgrade them in the Skycharter hangar at YYZ. I don't believe there was anyone who knew more about Twin Otters than Russ!!

Amazing Canadian Aviation history, and WWII flying ace - and much more . . .
