2nd road trip across Canada

Post by kinouille »

Hi everyone,
I got my IATRA, CPL, Multi-IFR... in quebec and as a lot of guys, I don't have any job. 2 months ago I crossed Canada by car looking for it and I came back home with nothing. This time I would like to do it again and be more prepared.
I may stay a while around Manitoba and Saskatchewan cause they seems to be 2 regions where everything is moving the most in the aviation industry.
I would like to meet new people and was wondering if anyone would like to have a drink and maybe in the same time meet some of the french speaking community.
I may arrive in Winnipeg next thursday or friday.
Have a nice day everyone :)

Good luck with your trip, however this may not be the season to go around.

If you are looking for float work the season is over 1/2 way done so chances of getting anything right now are not so great and even a lot of the wheel work slows down after summer as well. That is not to say it is not worth the trip just that the most fruitful time for these trips is usually in the early spring.

When all you have is lemons, learn to make lemonade. You might run into something. I agree with you that Manitoba and Saskatchewan tend to be the best places for a low-time pilot to look. If it were me, plan to stay long term so that you are known, even if it means a non-flying job to hold you over. Do your networking in the meantime.

Good luck.

thank you Istp, 200hr Wonder, and Panama jack for your comments.
I only have 250h and I am not really expecting to find any flying job without working on the ground first.
I am looking for a ground position that could lead to a cockpit (ramp, reservation, etc...).
I already did a road trip 2-3 months ago for "nothing" except few contacts and the beauty of Canada, It's hard (probably one of the hardest things I have ever done) but I have nothing to lose and it's my only chance to get a job so I must continue hoping for the best.

One of my first jobs was at a skydive place north of Calgary. It really surprised me that not a single pilot came by the whole summer I was there. We had to call around for a pilot when we needed one! Anyways, it was a great job and I think people overlook skydive places on road trips. Don't go to STI of course, that guy's a criminal. Good luck!

On more thing to ad that STI sort of touched on, be certain to have a plan. Years back you could get an aviation directory with all the aviation companies listed in them and I think it is still published. Get that and a map of your route and before even setting foot out the door plan your route with all the destinations checked off, resume's and cover letters prepared etc. Failure to plan? Plan to fail ;)

Thank you,
I am using the JP airline fleets (big book with all the company in the world) and google is my friend for the road trip plan.
I also use PCC that helps a lot to find who I have to meet and send an E-mail to the company before I come.
I wanted to create a website when I'll be done in order to help any low timer who is looking for a job with few advices like the best camping site, who to contact, what to bring, how to get a shower before an interview, etc... I think it could help a lot of guys who would be in my situation.

That would be pretty awesome of you if you set that website up, could be extremely helpful to others in the same situation.

I give you props for that (no pun intended)

P.S I really hope it works out for you this time around, Good luck

Hi winds in flight,
I'm just going to stay around Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Maybe East Ontario.
I'm going to be heading to Saskatchewan next week (Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Buffalo Narrows and La Loche) If I don't find anything here, and then maybe come back to Manitoba and try again.

Check out all the drop zones for sure, really good place to try to land a job.

Glider tow ops are good if you have a bunch of tailwheel time (same with banner tow companies)
