More flights in a day...

I was just reading through the comments on the CBC story about the Henan crash. Somebody posted that there were "more flights in a day in China than there are in a year in Canada." I find this hard to believe, 1.3 billion people or not. Comments?

I would believe it if you include Hong Kong as China. If you consider that China has many large cities, many of whom the average person has never heard of before yet they have a population greater than that of Toronto's. Also given the fact that 60% of the worlds population lives within 5 hours of flight time from Hong Kong It wouldnt surprise me the least bit. The amount of foreign and domestic flights into Hong Kong, Guanzhou, Xiang Yang, Tianjin, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen probably alone is more than what Canada sees. BTW of the cities I just mentioned the population for the smallest city is 4 million.

I don't think it's hard to believe that China has more air traffic, just hard to believe that it has 365 TIMES more air traffic.

In terms of movements Hong Kong isn't even as busy as Toronto.

Perhaps the person who originally stated this was trying to say they get 365 more passengers per day than Canada, in which case it is very likely since they do short regional flights on 747s and 777s.

I still seriously doubt that very much. China has only 40 times as many people, most of whom couldn't afford a taxi ride to the nearest airport, let alone a plane ticket.

Even with their economy growing like mad, China's GDP is still only 3 or 4 times larger than ours...

So how much does China actually fly? Let's look it up.
540 million person-trips per year in China estimated in 2010 according to:

Air Canada alone serves over 30 million customers annually.

China has way more international airlines than we do. Don't just count on China's population flying. Flights are coming in from way more countries there than here. Like I said 60% of the worlds population lives 5 hours flying distance from Hong Kong. China builds 7 new international airports per year. 30 million people is like 3-4 large cities in China, its nothing. Beijing capital airport sees 78 million people per year. That's one airport 2 times our population. 30 million is a spit in a bucket in Asia.
