Alberta Mountie gets nine months probation for assaulting woman

Woman was pushed to the ground after fight outside a bar, court heard

Red Deer, Alta. — Globe and Mail Update
Published on Friday, Aug. 27, 2010 3:21PM EDT

A Mountie in central Alberta has been sentenced to nine months probation for assaulting a woman in a bar parking lot.

Darren Ryan, 29, was charged with assault after a fight broke out between him and a woman outside Billy Bob's nightclub in March 2009.

Court heard the woman was pushed to the ground.

Mr. Ryan was off-duty at the time.

In addition to his probation, he has been ordered to complete 100 hours of community service and take anger management classes.

Mr. Ryan is currently on active duty with the RCMP.

It doesn't matter that he was RCMP at the time. It would have been a different story if he was on duty or still in uniform after a shift. He was just another guy out at that point. How many times a day does someone get pushed or hit in an argument every day? Who cares if they're a police officer? Why not put the spot light on real abusers like the guy who beats his wife because his steak is slightly overcooked?

Who's defending a guy who beats his wife? Not I.

If this cop shoves a woman to the ground/against a wall when he's not in uniform, it begs the question as to how he probably behaves when he's carrying a gun and loads of authority that is ripe for abuse. Or are you suggesting he probably acts like a model citizen when in uniform? I somewhat doubt that's the case.

I dont think anyone defends the beating of women, but in this quote above do you mean like yourself when you arrive at your control facility? You and CPL_ATC should take note, that I doubt very highly that you are a perfect human beings, you have your faults and flaws and have undoubtedly done things outside of the law at some point in your life. Should you be in charge of hundreds of lives on a daily basis based on this fact since you are there protect the safety and uphold the laws of the sky just as police officers are there to protect the people and uphold the law of the land?

No i'm saying it doesn't matter that he's a cop or not. They shouldn't be held to a higher standard. Why doesn't a pilot get raked over the coals like police do? I'd say they're more responsible for public safety when they're on the job than a police officer. 200 or 300+ people on an aircraft at the hands of a pilot versus a small handful of people being watched over by a police officer at one time.

The difference is controlling does not involve the routine physical interaction with people on the street, like cops do. So if a cop feels comfortable slamming his girlfriend to the ground, why would he hesitate to treat anyone he encounters on the job the same way? After all, when he's on the job, he can hide behind inverifiable lies, and claim he was just "doing his job."

I beg to differ! They are given extraordinary powers above the rest of the citizenry - including the right to use deadly force, if they deem it necessary. I think that they should be held to a higher standard than the rest of us... as the saying goes: 'For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required'...

Now, I'm sure that his punishment here is similar to what anyone else would get for the same actions, but perhaps there should be some professional repercussions also?
