200 pilots in China faked flight records: report

Chinese officials have found that 200 pilots falsified their flying histories, with more than half working for the parent company of an airline involved in China's worst plane crash in several years, a report said Monday, citing the head of the civil aviation administration.

The results of investigations in 2008-2009 showed that airlines desperate for staff were hiring pilots whose resumes had been faked, the newspaper China Business News cited Li Jiaxiang, head of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, as telling a recent teleconference.

The report comes as the agency investigates safety measures nationwide following an Aug. 24 crash that killed 42 people at a small airport in the northeast, in China's worst commercial airline disaster in nearly six years. Another 54 people were injured in the crash of the Brazilian-made Embraer 190 plane belonging to Henan Airlines during a nighttime landing at Yichun in Heilongjiang province.

Calls to CAAC's headquarters in Beijing rang unanswered Monday. A staffer who answered the phone at Shenzhen Airlines, which reportedly had 103 of the pilots with faked work histories on the payroll, said he had no idea about the report.

Shenzhen Airlines is the parent company of Henan Airlines.

China's aviation industry has expanded rapidly in recent years and regulators have struggled to keep up.

Airports have proliferated as have small regional airlines, reaching into remote cities like Yichun, 150 kilometres from the Russian border, that are eager to develop tourism and other industries to catch up with the country's economic boom.

All they care about is paper qualifications. Hint: aircraft can't read.

Part of the problem too though is there seems to be a lot of operations springing up in that part of the world who only care about paper qualifications as well. There seems to be a lot of pressure to press these young pilots into service, which I could only think is going to go horribly wrong. Why else would people be tolerating what apparently are very unacceptable conditions of training, or seemingly even lining up for them. Some of the foreign students I've spoke with seem like they've been press-ganged into service, their interest in their training is only as much as whatever they have to do to get home and get put to work. You have to wonder how much of the falsifications happen on their own initiative or if there is some outside coercion at work.

No, that's how they managed to go unnoticed for so long; 90% of pilots wear fake Rolexes so they can show off to the ladies. That's like saying that you can spot a fake pilot by seeing who's wearing Ray-Ban aviators. It's camouflage.

So, lesson learned here is....

Fake your hours, fake your qualifications, fake your resume, lie your way into a job.

What's the worse case scenario? You get to keep your job and as a bonus you get a little more training.

Wow ,still up on pprune.What a surprise ?
One of the european air carriers that hired some graduates of a certain flight school that allowed the pilots to log hobbs time while the airplane never actually took off ,had some of their pilots grounded,back in the early nineties .Liars are not just a risk to chinese aviation.

The insurance companies wouldn't of paid a dime. The people who really lost out were the families.
