I should only be nice

That said, I have a question:

Q: Which would you prefer: a competent pilot with a sometimes abrasive personality, or a really nice guy who is a weak stick and keeps having accidents?

I know which one I would prefer to work with, and I'm certain my opinion differs from the majority here, who value very different characteristics than I do.

LOL
The abrasive, competent pilot will serve you well for an individual case / situation. But over the long term, if his personality prevents others from learning from him (and if his abrasiveness is also arrogance so that he fails to learn from anyone else....) .... then he will be a long-term liability.

The fact is that we have to deal with the people that exist, and they exist in all forms. One abrasive, competent pilot maybe a company can live with. But a company full of abrasive will erode from inside.

Whether we like it or not, a certain amount of nice is necessary. Nasty is corrosive.

Not to mention that research indicates that Type-"A"s... especially with a high level of expressed hostility and anger... significantly raise their risk of coronary disease.

(Oh, yeah, right.... abrasive doesn't need research, 'cause he knows who is right  )

Too funny. Virtually every company listed on the stock market is "full of abrasive" people.

Canadians are so funny.

Fortunately for the world there's a wider range of personality/ability combinations, though it does seem like some days that Sartre was right.

Wonderful companies which forward the state of human existence..... such as WorldCom, Lehman Brothers, Arthur Andersen, Enron, Goldman Sachs, Tobacco companies in general, BP, EXXON, etc., etc., etc.

Many of the companies listed on the stock exchange have been convicted of at least one criminal act or another.

Wikipedia lists at least 13 in the USofA which have had their felony convictions stick.
Another fifty-odd accounting scandals.

It has been reported that 60 percent of Fortune 500 companies have a conviction annually, although I suppose many of those are overturned after a suitable number of years of litigation. And I freely admit that these statistics are hard to corroborate.

Nevertheless, here are a couple of lists of a hundred or so to review:

http://dissentingdemocrat.wordpress.com ... criminals/
http://www.corporatepredators.org/top100.html

Yes, just the sort of people which we want to further society.

Some people's priorities are so funny. :)

I've reduced my postings recently for some simple reasons. I cannot contribute anything constructive or share any of my (albeit more limited than some of the high time guys here) experiences without being personally attacked on the forum and via pm. I have no interest in continually defending myself or getting suckered in to the never ending debates from the usual suspects or the posters who have decided to open up 1 post accounts simply to attack or degrade others. Maybe its starting to change.. but I've got better things to waste my time on in life at present..

I quite miss the positivity and general upbeat and joking mood the board had when I first signed up 5 years ago.. Lots of characters in aviation and a lot of good people have come and gone.. both in real life and on the board..

I'm glad the mods have stepped up their game a bit.. but I fear we've already lost a lot of the experienced folk and some of the more prolific long timers. Hopefully they still lurk and may join us again.

STL, Sully, Widow and all the other mods.. keep up the good work.. we (well at least I) appreciate it.

Yeah, over the years I've also been email-bombed by various internet hero pilots who so bravely type on their keyboards. Thousands upon thousands of obnoxious, obscene, attacking emails. I just forward them back to their ISP (shrug).

Unless you're perpetually running for high school student class president, life isn't a popularity contest.

I remember reading an interview with a member of the Doors (no, it wasn't Ray, amazingly enough). Over the decades, he had been famous, and was sued all the time, and then he was nobody, and nobody was suing him, and then he was famous again, and then he was sued all the time.

He concluded that if you weren't in court, you simply weren't anyone

Another way of looking at it: if you don't do anything, no one will attack (or envy or hate) you.

A mathematician would refer to that as the "trivial solution" of life, which is perhaps very Canadian, but somewhat disappointing.

All I can say is, if you are being attacked or are receiving vicious PM's, please send one of the Mods a note with the offending message attached so we can deal with the user. If we don't know about a post or PM that is off-side, we can't do anything about it.

If there's a pattern, then perhaps a look at one's own posting habits/tone would be another good place to start. We all go through these issues, i know I have, but if we want the site to be beneficial to the vast majority as opposed to being the dumping ground for a few, then it requires everyone to set a positive example.

There is still a great pool of experience on this board, Hedley, JC, BPF, etc, etc, have a lot to contribute. It's starting to feel like it's a fashion statement to bag on the tone of this board, but I see most of those who are doing the complaining here and elsewhere have refused to make changes to their tone either which only exacerbates the problem. Personally I think its improved immeasurably this last while, and people go through phases where they may or may not post a lot - me included.

Make the board what you want it to be, it's in the hands of the posters.

On a related note from Lawrence, Kansas, July 19, 2010:

A Kansas farm wife called the local phone company to report her telephone failed to ring when her friends called - and that on the few occasions, when it did ring, her dog always moaned right before the phone rang.

The telephone repairman proceeded to the scene, curious to see this psychic dog or senile lady. He climbed a telephone pole, hooked in his test set, and dialed the subscriber's house.

The phone didn't ring right away, but then the dog moaned and the telephone began to ring.

Climbing down from the pole, the telephone repairman found:

1 . The dog was tied to the telephone system's ground wire with a steel chain and collar.

2. The wire connection to the ground rod was loose.

3. The dog was receiving 90 volts of signaling current when the number was called.

4..After a couple of jolts, the dog would start moaning and then urinate.

5. The wet ground would complete the circuit, thus causing the phone to ring.

Which demonstrates that some problems CAN be fixed by pissing and moaning;

thought you'd all like to know.

So hey, keep up the good work everyone,

'48

+1 what stl said!

The mods have jobs besides this one that take up enormous amounts of our time.

Hit the ! button on the lower right side of a post if you have a problem with it. All the mods will see it.

If "no joy" within a few hours pm a mod or a bunch of mods. Somebody in some time zone will get on it.

Stop with the personal attacks, already! You CAN say "I disagree with you and here is my point of view" versus "Your momma" or "my penis is bigger than your penis" or "I walked uphill, 5 miles in winter, knee deep in molasses, when I got in the commercial pilot business".

Profanity belongs in the Misc forum, not ANY of the others.

Why waste bandwith with non-answer/smart alec answers to questions people want REAL answers to? (Dangling participle? One of those grammatical things the grammar police will jump on!)

Grammar and spelling police:give it up. Not everyone's first language is English.

End of rant :(

And Hedley, lighten up. When I PM you all of those Communist links and call you a running dog lackey of the military industrial complex, I'm usually just drunk.
