Twotter flyby
Any idea why a yellow Twin otter is flying what appear to be low level gridlines northwest of YYZ?

Re: Twotter flyby
It would be the MNR twin otter doing the yearly rabies bating flights..Ghost Rider wrote:Any idea why a yellow Twin otter is flying what appear to be low level gridlines northwest of YYZ?

Not traps, flavoured bait containing rabies vaccine.
"The small bait treats are khaki green, with a toll-free rabies hotline stamped on them. Dennis Donovan, with the ministry’s wildlife research and development section, said people who come across the baits are being urged to leave them alone."
Some good shots of the baits and the twotter here:

Re: Twotter flyby
Well I can only go by track record and that tells me that Government and it's ministries spend money folishly on stuff that is of little or no value. This qualifies as folish. Society is obsessed and overindulgant in animal care and interfering with natural balance and this is just another prime example of some ones pet project that some how got approved. Throwng cookies out of an airplane in the hopes that some critter will find it and be imunized. How stupid. No smarter that forestry spending millions of dollars protecting scrubby little black spruce trees.

Yeah, eradicating a disease that's 100% fatal is a waste of time. Cancer research is very expensive too, we should give that up. You are trolling, amigo.MUSKEG wrote:What a colossal waste of money.

Re: Twotter flyby
Racoon rabies as it exists today is far from natural , The population is driven largely by human sprawl . If you think this is a pet project than perhaps you could explain how we did this project large scale throughout the southern united states for the USDA and and halted the spread of several strains of rabies . I might ad this operation is full cost recovery which in plain english means that the flights generate revenue for the province of Ontario. Its not about vacinating rabid animals as they are walking dead its about creating bariers of vacinated animals between areas.

Maybe its not the trees, maybe its the communities that they surround, the outpost camps within, or the lodges that employee many of us to fly into them? Not sure where your from Muskeg, but NWO is foresty. Used to employee ten's of thousands, and still does. Comes down to values protection. Way up north they only fight it if its going to threating a community or value. If there is nothing around, "let er burn!" Around Red lake, tons of forestry and mining camps spread through out, not to mention the thousands of outposts cabins and lodges dotted across the landscape. All this brings lots of money to the north!

Which is why I drive a used car........What a colossal waste of money
The MNR has been doing this for a long time ( I hear over 30 years) so it must be worthwile if they are still doing it.
They have been doing the same thing in Toronto (and other cities as well) placing the vaccine pellets in different locations by hand.
(Perhaps someone should tell Porter about this - They could do a small mod on the 8's and drop a few on their way to YTZ. After all Deluce is all about money.....)
Using an airplane to cover large forested areas seems cost efficient to me.
Maybe the MNR could hire Niss to toss a few cookies out the window (and pay him of course....) and all the other brethren with small planes criss crossing the Ontario landscape with delightful medication for all the 'coons and foxes out there .....

Re: Twotter flyby
The rabies vaccination campaign has had one unexpected consequence: It has conditioned every raccoon, skunk, and coyote in the Province of Ontario to hunt for food on precise north-south tracks...

Re: Twotter flyby
He was over here in Stratford Friday......Anybody know the pilot? Can you ask him to stop saying "ANY CONFLICTING PLEASE REPLY C-G??? ON 122.8" at the end of his position reports?
IT'S ANNOYING, and unessesary.
Just like my big bold type.

Re: Twotter flyby
This seems to be common among federal pilots from DND aircraft to Transport Canada to the MNR. I remember the 415 bomber radio calls are particularly shocking in length while providing little relevant information. Any respondents please reply at viewtopic.php?f=54&t=67738 on Avcanada on the internet.
edit- RCMP pilot's calls are always very short yet contain all the info you would need to know if you were a conflict.

Maybe not such a good idea for Porter considering their choice of mascot?dashx wrote:

Nothing cleans a dirty plane like 100LL!
Re: Twotter flyby
it really only takes 2 sesconds to add "conflicting (or traffic, whatever) on 26.7 it's ABC"
I'd rather know who I was talking to rather than trying to, after the fact, ask who they are. That would take more radio time in my opinion.

Here's an idea how about make it useful info? repeat where you are and then your call sign, lord knows how many times I've missed their location/call sign the first time.teacher wrote:it really only takes 2 sesconds to add "conflicting (or traffic, whatever) on 26.7 it's ABC"

Sumspot traffic, ABC, 10 miles to the north, 5500', southbound otherspot, Sumspot traffic ABC
easy to the point and everything is useful, "Conflicting traffic" means nothing and just clutters the freq

P.S I monitor more then one freq at a time and it's as easy and looking down at the radio and see which one is receiving

Re: Twotter flyby
Samson, your response is brilliant!
Teacher if your listening to 3 comm's at once (cause we all have 3 comm's don't we?) and everybody is talking twice as much as they need to, and you don't a problem with that. Then your the problem I guess. If another plane is truly in conflict and you have a couple freqs open then there are ways to solve which one to respond on.
The FAA thinks its a problem.
One of the changes that has appeared in the 2007 AIM is in section 4-1-9(g).
Allow me to quote it for you:
"Self-announce is a procedure whereby pilots broadcast their position or intended flight activity or ground operation on the designated CTAF . . . Pilots stating 'Traffic in the area please advise' is not a recognized Self-Announce Position and/or Intention phrase and should not be used under any condition."
Although they need to work on their grammar a little, their message is clear. The habit of using this call has become a big enough problem that the FAA felt it needed to address it.

Re: Twotter flyby
Hey guys:
How did this conversation morph from a rather playful discussion about raccoon vaccination programs into an argument about radio etiquette?
Let's get back on topic - no more discussion in this thread about radio stuff unless it concerns a raccoon, skunk, or coyote using the aircraft radio instead of eating the bait.
