How Many Jobs?

Post by Bushav8er »

Interesting, yet not really unexpected, most (on this forum) received their CPL within the last 10 years and, according to the numbers, have 5000+ hours - so you've been working/flying -

To take that last poll one step further, how many jobs did it take you reach those hours, to get your dream job, or to be one step away from it?

I worked for 3 different companies in Canada, not really getting anywhere.
Moved South, towed banners during my time off, pretending to kill people and kittens. Moved way north, racked up more time than should be legal. Which led to my current gig, flying a piston twin, opportunity to move into turbine. It's not the aircraft that matters though, it's the life style/QOL. I sleep in my bed at night, get paid more than regional airline capt's, and can jumpseat on any US carrier.

It's taken me 6 jobs to get to where I believe I'm comfortable in my career, however ask me again in 6 months when the new job smell wears off.

8 jobs including 1 contract expiration and 2 bankrupt companies for a total of 3 layoffs.

Oh yah, fired once for trying to follow the CARs and Canadian Labour Laws.

Only ever lost a job due to bankruptcy and base closure. Mostly contract and seasonal gigs.

F/A for the following ......

Canada 3000
Skyservice Airlines
Kelowna Flightcraft
Trans Capital Air
Voyageur Airways
Global Peace Initiative (Purser on that 747SP that sat in YQT forever)
Nolinor Aviation
Flair Air
Corporate Company / Skyservice Business Aviation

It took me a while there to remember them all! And I only started flying in '99! **Groan**

Hey Salt, I'm curious about your west flight job, I want to apply there however I cannot find any minimums or website to apply at. I work for another survey company out of CYBW currently.

I'm on my 4th job now, aside from freelance instruction which I don't count and just consider part of being a pilot. Current job is more of a destination type of job then a stepping stone job.

So 3 jobs to get to a long term comfy job.

I think it helps on the resume too when you have a record of sticking around for a while.

Wow. Almost six years later and add 3 more jobs to the resume, plus another military gig.

Thank goodness this career is anything but stagnant.

3 jobs, 16 years

Started in 2000, but didn't land my first paid flying job until 2007. Can honestly say landing that first job was the toughest, but paved the way for the rest of my career so far. Consider myself lucky.

So are you flying in Europe? Where did you get your JAA? Would you consider it a beneficial thing to have even if you don't fly over there?

No more JAA - it's EASA now. It's become a lot more complicated to convert Licences.

10 jobs for steady employers plus contracting. I've been flying porfessionally since '99 and have 5100 hours. Most of my flying has been air ambulance or corporate so 300 hours is a big year. I seem to have the good fortune to get hired by employers who go under or hit hard times andhave to do lay-offs. I'm hangin' on to a seat right now with white knuckles.

14 years of flying. 8 different jobs. The joys of seasonal float gigs... And that included a 4 year gig with KBA and 4 seasons with Tofino. Now I'm somewhere that I'm not leaving :)

3 jobs. First one, took whatever I could get. Second job was a good one. I made the third move because sometimes in this business the only way to significantly bump up your income is to make a move. 2% increases per year at a good company will not usually make up for an immediate 25% increase at another good company. Moving companies doesn't come without risk but it has worked out well for me.
