Hey guys crosscheck other navigation systems
OTTAWA (AFP) - A Canadian woman had to be rescued from the roof of her submerged car after driving into an isolated marsh as she relied on GPS navigation, police said Wednesday.

The Ontario Provincial Police said the woman called 911 emergency services on her cellphone for help, after she became lost on her way to work east of Toronto late Tuesday.
"She advised she was standing on top of her car as it was submerged in a heavy marsh," police said in a statement. "She was following her GPS (Global Positioning System) directions and became lost."
The vehicle had become stuck in mud and quickly began filling up with water.
Rescuers searched the conservation area until finally she was spotted "in the middle of the marsh" by firefighters dressed in wet suits who waded into the waist deep water.

Re: Children of the Cyan Line
The blind dependence of people in modern society on the myriad of electronic gadgets is absolutely ridiculous. By the way, good thread title, rigpiggy.

I think I might have it wrong,"magenta it was based on a video put out by American Airlines called automation dependency "i think". Anyway the most telling part was 2 pilots on a severe clear day being given the sidestep approach about a5 miles back, and rather than fly the airplane they both went heads down on the FMC. The speaker in the video was warren vanderberg. if anybody finds it post it, I want to see it again

Gadgets don't solve stupidity. So no matter how much automation you put in front of people's face, it won't help. The following article is a pretty good read.

You can buy a lot of nice maps for the price of a GPS. AND it actually makes you go into a corner store and get ripped off by the locals. You might even run across something cool in the corner store! OR hear a cool story. Or hear the local accent.

Sue the bastards who cannot even make a half-decent GPS. Yes, Garmin, it's because of your incompetency that her life was put into great risk.

Re: Children of the Cyan Line
this isn't the first time something like this has happened:
http://mashable.com/2010/05/30/google-maps-lawsuit/
http://www.azcentral.com/business/consu ... es-18.htmlHarvey Gerst, a 70-year-old recording engineer from Sanger, Texas, says it's taken him some time to get used to his device. After it directed him into oncoming traffic last December, he started calling it Christine, for the malevolent Plymouth in a Stephen King horror novel. "She's trying to kill me," he says. But the more he uses it, the better sense he has for when to listen to her instructions. "Basically, she's quirky and we understand that."

Re: Children of the Cyan Line
That's because the GPS can't tell the difference between lanes.
Re: Children of the Cyan Line
my brother is a road warrior, and as a platinum customer gets a GPS with all his rental cars.
A while back he was in San Diego while one of the nuke carriers was in town, GPS showed him on track to drive off one of the wharves. He is smarter than those two, and didn't blindly follow, a corner store and 7.99 later with a map he found his way. I understand they regularly diddle the signals.

Maybe it is better to ask for directions.

An interesting article about how GPS is causing us to lose our sense of direction: http://www.walrusmagazine.com/articles/ ... g-systems/
The article mentions a website with a small quiz on direction-finding. i found it somewhat challenging in places..http://www.gettinglost.ca/
