Speaking of payload, who's the skinny little guy on the left in the first picture?

Re: Bradley Twin Otter Pictures
I see the resemblence. I guess you would have to date the pics to narrow it down.Changes in Latitudes wrote:Speaking of payload, who's the skinny little guy on the left in the first picture?

Was that big chunk of rock behind the ship floating around as well? I think this pic was taken off of Hans Island, it is definately in Canadian Waters as they are flying the maple Leaf on the main.B757FO wrote: The ICE BREAKER
The photo of the ice breaker in the background was a science project funded by the University of Washington. It was frozen in the ice about 500 miles north of Barrow. They left point Barrow Alaska and took the ice breaker up and essentially froze it in the ice on purpose. They were there for 6 weeks I think. Floating around in the ice flow while conducting scientific tests etc evaluating the ocean floor etc. There were actually 2 twins there that day the other is out of the picture taking by the first officer. The planes came from Barrow to resupply with food equipment people etc.
Thats the best I can do perhaps others here can add more to the other ones.

I think it was a crew change out of Yrb or Yfb for the cg crew.

Re: Bradley Twin Otter Pictures
I can vouch 100% that TFX was a Ptarmigan aircraft before first Air. I flew hundreds of hours in it back in the mid '80s. I don't know where it came from, they had it when I got hired. Big Dave Baxter was the Chief pilot then,(retired now after Wardair/canadian/Air Canada) his son Chris Baxter( also a pilot now) took a bunch of the pictures on Airliners.net. The picture credited to Chris probably has his dad flying it.
Ptarmigan also had WAB, I believe ex Wardair, (it was tragically crashed by a new captain doing a beat up of the airstrip. They struck a helicopter on the ground, rolled, killing himself & the new f/o) ARW-as in A.R.W. Hettrick (deceased) ex owner of Ptarmigan, KAZ, known as kilo alpha zero- a joke against it's designation of serial # 4, I believe, one of the prototypes. Can't remember where it went.
There were a few others that went through the Ptarmigan livery, PAZ, ex Pan arctic- I think it sunk in the pacific somewhere.
QKN, an ex Echo Bay bird-notorious for being the cool aid wagon that hauled the poison for the massive suicide mission in Jones town (sp) Guyana. It still had little round patches over the bullet holes.
After First Air took over things sort of went downhill in the DHC-6 dept. Most of the guys I knew, T Durkan, Marty Gagnon, & nearly all the Ptarmichickens went elsewhere.

Interesting .....QKN, an ex Echo Bay bird-notorious for being the cool aid wagon that hauled the poison for the massive suicide mission in Jones town (sp) Guyana. It still had little round patches over the bullet holes....
I didn't know that...
Seems they called for only the otter to evacuate a few 'defectors' leaving with the Congressman that was looking into the cult, but they had to call in a 2nd plane-a Cessna, which contained the pretend defector Larry Layton, the only shooter convicted, who was released in 2002.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonestown# ... _shootings
" While most of the Ryan delegation began to depart on a large dump truck to the Port Kaituma airstrip, Congressman Ryan and Dwyer stayed behind in Jonestown to process any additional defectors.
Shortly before the dump truck departed for the airstrip, Temple loyalist Larry Layton, the brother of Deborah Layton, demanded to join the group. Several defectors voiced their suspicions about his motives.
Shortly after the dump truck initially departed, Temple member Don Sly (nicknamed "Ujara") grabbed Ryan while wielding a knife. While Congressman Ryan was unhurt after others wrestled Sly to the ground, Dwyer strongly suggested that Ryan leave Jonestown while Dwyer filed a criminal complaint against Sly.
Ryan did so, promising to return later to address the dispute.
The truck departing to the airstrip had stopped after the passengers heard of the attack on Ryan. Ryan then boarded the truck and reached the airstrip later that afternoon.
The entourage had originally scheduled a 19-seat Twin Otter to fly them back to Georgetown. Because of the defectors departing Jonestown, the group grew in number and now an additional aircraft was required. Accordingly, the U. S. Embassy arranged for a second plane, a six-passenger Cessna.
When the entourage reached the Port Kaituma airstrip between 4:30 p.m. and 4:45 p.m., the planes were supposed to be there, but they hadn't showed up yet. The group had to wait, until the aircraft landed at approximately 5:10 p.m. Then the boarding process began.
Larry Layton was a passenger on the Cessna, the first aircraft to set up for takeoff. After the Cessna had taxied to the far end of the airstrip, Layton produced a gun and started shooting at the passengers. He wounded Monica Bagby and Vernon Gosney, and tried to kill Dale Parks, who disarmed him.
At this time, some passengers had boarded the larger Twin Otter. A tractor with a trailer attached driven by members of the Temple's Red Brigade security squad approached the Otter.
When the tractor neared within approximately 30 feet (9.1 m) of the Otter, roughly concurrent with the shootings on the Cessna, the Red Brigade opened fire on the aircraft while at least two Red Brigade members circled the plane on foot.
There were perhaps nine shooters whose identities are not all certainly known, but most sources agree that Joe Wilson, Jones' head of security, Thomas Kice Sr., and Ronnie Dennis were among them.
A few seconds of the shooting were captured on ENG videotape by NBC cameraman Bob Brown.Congressman Ryan, cameraman Bob Brown, photographer Greg Robinson, NBC reporter Don Harris and Temple defector Patricia Parks were killed in the few minutes of shooting.
Jackie Speier, Steve Sung, Richard Dwyer, Tim Reiterman and Anthony Katsaris were among the nine injured in and around the Twin Otter. After the shootings, the Cessna's pilot, along with the pilot and copilot of the Otter, fled in the Cessna to Georgetown, leaving behind the gunfire-damaged Otter and the injured Ryan delegation members.
The murder of Congressman Ryan was the first and only murder of a Congressman in the line of duty in the history of the United States. "

Jeepers.
Better not use that one in the retirement card....
Re: Bradley Twin Otter Pictures
The picture of the twin with the Ice Breaker in the back ground was taken off Cape Herschel. That is NNW of Grise Fiord.
The pic in the snow was Capt Karl Zberg using the great De-ice equip that the twin was equiped with at the drill site Eclipse. If my info is correct that site was about 5 min from LCI.

Re: Bradley Twin Otter Pictures
Seeing the pictures of the Bradley machines got me going checking my old log books for suitable pictures , I flew for Bradley air service from 1974 till 1978, This is a B/W photo I put in my Log Book of one of the aircraft . C-GPHD, a single Otter that I flew in the summer of 78. Photo was taken on Devon Is. There was not much demand for the single otter by then and I left Bradley Air shortly after that, Maybe someone can tell me if the Single Otter was ever used after 1978 for Offstrip. It was by far the best Offstrip aircraft built IMHO regards Mel

Re: Bradley Twin Otter Pictures
Worst thing First Air ever did was get rid of the twins, it was a great operation and although I was there for a short period of time, it was an awesome experience. That name edited guy, I thin that is his name, screwed things up pretty bad. IMHO Almost drove air inuit in the ground too!!!! I guess if you want an airline to fail, hire that useless piece of skin.
