America in Color from 1939-1943

Been there as a child. I grew up in the late 40’s early 50’s in St. Jerome, Que. and then Montreal from 62 on. Always had food in the tummy provided by our own family resourcefulness and not by food banks provided by others. I wish kids today could have even a week of my childhood.

Absolutely incredible photography.
I particularly liked #62. Even with modern, high quality photography, one would be very hard pressed to capture such a quality picture.

That's fascinating. Thanks for posting that.
Hey Jake....St.Jerome...wasn't there a Barkley Grow parked at the airstrip? It was painted blue.

Ah ... the good old days..... when a young lady would look at an aspiring young pilot with adoration.
This picture could be right out of The Old Fogducker's life.
Thanks for posting that link.

I LOVE the grubby kids and the bare feet and the earnestness of it all! All the children playing guns with old fence boards and sticks!
My grandfather came to Canada in around 1910 and he and my grandmother lived in a dugout in Manitoba, near Winnipeg! You can't imagine how awful that must have been to come from Yorkshire and spend the first winter in a new country at < -40, living in the ground! He improved his life by signing up and going to Vimy! Fortunately for those of you who hang with bated breath on my every word, he survived. Absolutely amazing lives they lived, yet commonplace. I guess its always been called survival. All I have to do is make sure my car is winterized and renegotiate my Telus contract. Tonight I'm going to drink a Guinness or two and phone my grandchildren........
Thank you for that post - did others find that not all the photos were displayed, only captions?

There are some wonderful photos in that collection. Thanks for the link Jake.
I had one or two that initially showed the dreaded red X, but after right-clicking the X and then 'show picture' they loaded ok.- did others find that not all the photos were displayed, only captions?

Siddley ... here I am about 50 years later, still using a rock to put on a prop!
The adoring partner is still there too....always marvelling at my aeronautical design and construction talents, and use of stone-age tools.

I suspect that kids in the future will have it far rougher than any of us or our forefathers. We inherited a world rich in resources and with only a billion or so people. Those numbers are becoming inverse, so get ready for ecology to happen...eventually.

Yup, the 'greatest generation' had to endure some hardships in depression and war, but rode the longest economic boom during the post war. The boomers are the generation who won't grow up and move out of the limelight even as they are retiring. Us Xers and so on get stuck with the bills and the mess.
Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

Here's where that newspaper pulled most of those photos from: http://www.flickr.com/photos/library_of ... 179068427/
There're some fantastic aviation shots - lots of bombers under construction during the war. Amazing stuff.
