Aviation company, manager face unlawful export charge
Kenn Borek Air and a former general manager are facing charges of alleged unlawful export of goods to Myanmar.
Kenn Borek Air Ltd. and a former general manager with the Calgary-based aviation company are facing charges for the alleged unlawful export of goods to Myanmar.
The company and Stephen Penikett have been charged with two counts each under the Customs Act and the Export and Import Permits Act, following an investigation by the Canada Border Services Agency.
The charges were laid after the company and Penikett allegedly exported one de Havilland DHC-6 Twin Otter airplane and 149 aircraft parts to Myanmar in November 2007 without valid permits issued by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada.
The Customs Act offences carry a maximum fine of $500,000 or a maximum five-year prison term, and the Export and Import Permits Act offences carry no maximum fines but a maximum prison term of 10 years.
A court date has been set for Dec. 14 in Calgary.
