Would you go down with the ship or jump?
Lets say.....in the event of an emergency would you jump with a parachute or try and land the puppy? I mean double engine failure still flying machine...risk the landing or jump? ( of course you and the co joe are the only 1's onboard besides cargo) I'd be watching my airplane disapear into the ground!
But then again i enjoy jumping outta airplanes

Ship, if you let the plane crash you're fubar if it hits any property, and the company will take your pay for life for the loss of their ship....
and if you're jumping in an area without property, ie woods, you're better off with the plane which has the first aid/survival kit and elt.. parachute, they're not going to find you as fast(if at all).

I remember watching a documentary on Fighter Jocks in the U.S., which said that a majority of pilot-deaths in the military could have been prevented IF the pilots ejected.
Even sitting on an ejection-seat these pilots still tried to 'make it work'...all the way down to the ground!

If you had bailout gear onboard....would you? I know there have been a few incidents where the pilot saved his life by jumping out after a parachute wraped around the tail...but thats in a skydive aircraft...where you HAVE to wear a bailout rig....and still many pilots don't.

Saw the most amazing thing once. Jumped out of the plane in very windy conditions once. So windy, I had very little if any forward speed on landing. Saw the pilot attempt to land with a direct crosswind for the runway, I could see he was having trouble landing it. I don't recall the wind speeds that afternoon but the mean had to be 15-20kts without the gusts.
Anyway, to make a long story even longer, there wasn't enough fuel to make it to the next closest airport that had a runway that prefered the wind much better. So he elected to land on the taxiway, into the wind. He did it, the tiny C182 touched down nicely. But a strong gust of wind put it back into the air just like that. Oh, by the way, there were 50-60 foot trees, powerlines and heavy equipment no more than 200 yards infront of him.
That guy powered up, flew over the fence while going under the power lines at the same time. Made it through just in time to have to make a hard bank to fly down a road-way surrounded by those 50-60 foot trees narrower than the wing span. Cleared those and came around for a second attempt at that taxiway landing.
What we didn't know at the time he landed his second attempt was that as he performed this miraculous manouever the first time, the nose gear hit on a piece of heavy equipment. I think we all know how much room there is between the prop tip and the bottom of the nose gear. He pulled up to the DZ, got out of the plane, kissed the ground and said I quote, "LET'S GET DRUNK!"
Me and a couple other skydivers took it upon ourselves to tie the plane down for the evening because the pilot was still kind of in shock of what had just happened. As we pushed it back to tie it down, the nose gear collapsed. The hit damaged the gear and broke the fire wall.
I don't know what was going through his mind at the time, but my hat is off to him for getting him and that plane home safely.
Oh ya, this was all caught on video too!!!!

They asked . Yeager about bailing out of a flaming P-51 cockpit and he said "I'd have jumped weather I had a parachute or not".
From the first post. I would land or jump depending on if I thought I had a decent chance of not hurting myself. I have about 20000 landings in airplanes and 200 under parachutes; the parachute broke my ankle once and the planes haven't let me down yet.

Lets see... if the plane was flyable, or glidable, and there was a fair chance that the wee-looking field way down there is landable, then I'd stick with it.
If my trusty steed tossed a wing or something of the sort, then I'd be out of there. What I'd do then is a function of my altitude. It looks like bailout rigs are freefly friendly, so trying a bit of sit-fly wouldn't be out fo the question- or maybe tracking across the wild blue. That, or a low pull would be fun... you only have one chance anyways, right? *(Just kidding)
