Sunwing

Post by confuzed »

I've been hearing around the terminal that Sunwing is bringing in over a 100 contract pilots this winter and have apparently stopped their reciprocal agreement. Please tell me that this info has been exaggerated somewhere down the line and isn't completely factual......that'd really suck for those wanting a job right now if it were true :(

Yes it's true. Canjet got away with it last year and Sunwing is doing the same thing now. It's pretty sad that this is being allowed to happen.

The key here is not that 100 foreign pilots are coming in, but rather that there is no reciprocity for Canadian crews any longer.

Sunwing pilots can at least apply to Westjet, Air Canada, Air Transat, or even go direct entry captain to Porter if they are looking for stability.

It's still a reciprocal agreement.

How does this rumor get started every year?

So we have yes and a no answer? Which is it, lol

Didn't Canjet only bring over around 50 though last year? That's well below half of what's being brought in this year from Sunwing. Is Canjet doing the same thing this year too, surely they've hired since last year? Very disheartening.... :(

Oh well, could be worse though I guess.

It's only a reciprocal agreement if roughly the same amount of jobs are offered on both sides of the equation. Are there going to be roughly 100 positions for Canadians this coming summer overseas? What I'm told is no, and that is the problem.

I'm aware of the definition of reciprocal......

Rest assured if for some reason there was to be no reciprocity come this spring, I would be the first one screaming about it......followed by about 150 others who would be direclty affected.

I truly hope my sources are wrong and wish Sunwing pilots the best.

Totally untrue as a matter of fact every Sunwing pilot will be deployed in Europe next summer. Totally reciprocal unlike Canjet...

Sunwing is now aligned with TUI in Europe, and the sharing of pilots and aircraft is an important element of the deal for economic reasons. They are in a fully reciprocal arrangement, and I don't know where these stupid rumours are coming from, but I suspect it's from people who only hear the "foreign pilots" part without hearing the reciprocal part. They are not like Canjet, who are getting away with murder, IMHO.

Yes it would be great if there was enough work for Sunwing's pilots in Canada year round, but there just isn't. Without such a deal, they just wouldn't be economically viable without laying off most of their pilots for the summer, full stop. Skyservice did it (reciprocal) for 15+ years and it worked very well.

I agree 100% with you. Sunwing has always had a reciprocal arrangement just like Skyservice, but when I heard it was following Canjet's footsteps for the first time, obviously it got under my skin. Glad Sunwing folks have confirmed that this is not the case.

A couple points - First, at least CanJet has hired all through the year. It will be over 30 permanent positions, and they are also hiring a couple of Enerjet guys as well in early December.

I agree it sucks that there were no reciprocal agreements the past two years. However, CanJet simply did not have the ability to put together a deployed operation during the worst two summers in Europe from a financial perspective. Look at the carnage in European charter carriers the past two years - Excel UK, Viking, EuroCypria, Futura... The list goes on.

There will be a reciprocal agreement next summer barring another failure, so at least they are trying to make it a more fair situation for all involved.

Sorry but that's closing the barn doors after the horses have already left.
