Airport security in North a concern: expert

Airport security may be tightening up across Canada, but people flying within the northern territories do not face any screening, worrying a security expert who warns terrorists could use the North as an entry point.

Currently, airline passengers flying from Iqaluit, Yellowknife and Whitehorse to cities in southern Canada must go through full security screening, including metal detectors and carry-on luggage scans.

But passengers travelling within northern communities — for example, between Iqaluit and Yellowknife — walk directly to their departure gates without undergoing any security screening.

Terrorists could take advantage of those lax security measures to get into North America, said Robert Huebert, a political science professor at the University of Calgary who specializes in Arctic studies.

"If you can get to the [Arctic] shore by some form of maritime transport, then you can get onto one of these aircrafts without being checked," Huebert told CBC News.

"Then you can get yourself to Yellowknife or to Whitehorse, and then basically have someone meeting you and then get onto the highway system."

Just another example of the steroid monkeys being paid to think on the publics expense. If the rent a cops or RCMP actually encountered a terrorist they would book off sick faster than you could say Jack Daniels.

If they can get to Canadian shores I doubt they'd go through the Arctic so they could get on a flight unscreened and then meet someone and drive to their destination; why the hell wouldn't they just land in Halifax or Vancouver? And there's a highway to Whitehorse from Inuvik, or they could stay in their boat and sail up the Mackenzie to Yellowknife without ever having to get on a plane. There's no risk of terrorists getting into Canada on a flight from Iqaluit to Yellowknife.

Uhhhhh yea.... I guess they missed the memo about unscreened pax flying directly into the major airports?

On second thought... relocating CATSA to Rankin Inlet might not be a bad idea... I know several who don't seem very busy at their current location

the good old prof who is an "expert" in the arctic is forgetting one thing. most of the towns that line the shores of the arctic have populations under 500 people....if a middle eastern guy with terrorist ideas rolls into town (FROM THE OCEAN!) they're gonna stand out...lol. i seem to recall reading a story in uphere magazine a few years ago about someone trying to get into canada using resolute as the point of entry...he showed up in a raft or something and quickly found himself talking to the RCMP. do terrorists even own parkas?...lol.

Nobody tell these folks (the "prof", the TSA, and the terrorists) how charter flight passengers fly around within Canada, and to the US, unscreened everyday.

Lots of middle eastern types in the Artic. It may be difficult to tell when everyone is wearing their winter garb. But they have their own place of worship in Inuvik ,complete with its own room to keep the women seperate from the men.
Loads of jobs available in the north for anyone who can get out of bed in the morning and turn up and do a day/nights work.
