Ups and Downs. Where are we ?
Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that there has been quite a bit of talk about many companies back on the hiring spree for the past 5 months. Yet, the changes in the job market is very slow to show.
I know it can take time for the industry to bounce back up but normally it starts to show a little more signs than it has been for the past 3 months.
Is it actually going to happen or are we going to see the back and forth of companies announcing ground school/hiring and cancelling again
This is my limited knowledge of who might be hiring. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong and if you have insight info
AC, Jazz, West Jet (Maybe!!) Porter (hiring again after their Freez), GGN, Transat, the new start up Regional 1
Just curious to see what others see and think.

They all have "pilot" under their employment pages right now, that is a much better sign than 5 months ago.

First off I wouldn't consider Regional1 a start up, they've been around for a few years. As for hiring, it doesn't go crazy overnight. It's a transition from slow times to busy times. We may be seeing that transition now, or it just may be a few blurps on the radar. Lets hope for the former

I think he means sky regional not regional 1 as the new regional start up, (could be wrong though)

How about sideways? It's easy to forget all the pilots and families that were affected when Skyservice shut down. Great news at one company usually means bad news at another.
There might be lots of hiring happening, but there are piles of unemployed, highly qualified pilots floating around too scoop up the new jobs. Companies love recycling hightime pilots into new, lower paying jobs!

It also depends on what part of the industry you are looking at. So for example if you are looking at an entry level instructor job you have to wait untill the job movements ripples down as the T prop captains move up, the FO's get promoted, new hire FO's get pulled out of pistons twins/instructors jobs which opens up new instructor positions. It takes time for all this to happen. Also the fall is traditionally the slowest time for hiring. I would say this spring is looking better than at any time in the last 3 years.

Re: Ups and Downs. Where are we ?
my apologies, I Meant Sky Regional, not Regional 1
Do we know a rough number of how many pilots were laid off from sky service? I know some of them were picked up by porter but that is a small number who got employment. I am hearing numbers bounce from 100 to 140 pilots who got laid off. My understanding about 5 or 8 got picked up as direct entry Cpt with porter and that leaves as mentioned earlier alot of highly qualified pilots on their pink slip.
I do hope these guys get work soon, the least, have the option to be called first before they hire from the outside. specially if the numbers are as high as I think they might be with their lay off.

Re: Ups and Downs. Where are we ?
There are still plenty of pilots from Zoom looking for work, on top of Skyservice layoffs!
Re: Ups and Downs. Where are we ?
Some of the SkyService guys are flying the 757 at Jazz untill they get all their own people up and running.
