Approach plate rant...

Post by Severe Clear »

Is it just me? Or is anyone else tired of saying ridiculous words while briefing an RNAV approach. I’m talking about those retarded names of fixes like “XIBWKX” that you can’t pronounce half the time! I understand that these are computer generated names, but come on! Why not put some creativity into these approach plates and come up with some cool names of fixes. How awesome would it be to be cleared the RNAV runway 30 via “Maverick”.. Just something I had to get off my chest...

What is an approach plant?
Yes, some of the waypoints are a little difficult to pronounce but also can be funny. The reason they all can't be "cool" Top Gun words is because there would be too many duplicates. There's more than just the RNAV(GNSS) approach you're used to shooting in Eastern Fort Shithole. World wide there are probably hundreds of thousands of waypoints. They try to avoid duplicates.

Some procedures have more logical waypoint names. I'm sure people can post or mention them here.
For example:
BOOTH on the BOOTH, CANUCK and MEADOWS arrivals is located around the old Toll Booth on the Coquihalla.
DUNJY near CYYJ - dungeness crab...
DISCO near CYYJ - I'm guessing Disco Stu.
METOW on the GRIZZ arrival - Methow valley
LANRK on the LANRK arrival - Lanark county...
etc.

I'm guessing you've got to be happy with aviation if this is what you're ranting about.
Not saying much for me for replying I guess...

The USA took all the cool names. We (little brother) got left with mainly computer generated ones :(

It's actually named after Discovery Pass, but it always makes me think of bell-bottoms.
The ICAO standard for approach plate waypoints is that they have five characters and be pronounceable, so if you've got "XIBWKX" there's something very wrong with your plate; the waypoints aren't merely generated by computers and then published without being checked. And for those of you who can't figure out how to pronounce an "X" at the beginning of a name, you'd better not go to China or you might end up in places like Xian or Xinjiang. Here's a tip: it's pronounced somewhere between "SH" and "J".

Anyone care to hazard a guess as to the origin of the "Crabfat", "Pongo" and "Fishead" approach fixes for Shearwater Nova Scotia? OFD, you are not allowed to answer for 24 hours to give the young guys a chance!

The FAA seems to have a bit of a sense of humour too. I Liked the old "Tippy Toe Two" visual arrival into SFO

I've always said, I honestly believe Navcan staff get together and have a big drunken party and play boggle with 5 letters and whatever they end up with, "Ding",(lightbulb) a new waypoint!

Some of the early ones took the name of a gazetted place and shortened it to 5 letters. The fix south of Calgary over the town of Vulcan became VUCAN. A fix near the village of Torington became TORON. Pigeon Lake NDB became PIGEN etc, etc.
There was a waypoint for runway 26L in Vancouver called SEKOK, near the clothing optional Wreck Beach but I see they changed that.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

Opps a little spelling error.. Of course I meant Plate, not plant.. This is why i'm a pilot and not an english teacher... 8)

I'm just tired of saying those retarded names over the radio.. It's embarrasing and it makes me feel like i'm off the short bus special..

ZHU = Haut-Bois in CYHU. (Pronounce something like: O Bwa)

There's a couple out in Quebec that are French words like: OMBRE, MAIRE and FLEUR.

I'm not 100% positive about PESAC, but its located near Ste-Anne-de-la-Pérade, known for its ice fishing cabins (che aux petits poissons des Chenaux)

There's a place called Zzyzx in California. I wonder of there's a fix over it...

Goodbye,

Louis

Let's not forget the BALLS final approach fix in Hay River. Just once in my career I want to be "BALLS out in the procedure turn."

In New Jersey flying east on V312, after crossing the Coyle VOR, you cross the JIMEE intersection, then FALON.

I always chuckle when someone pronounces the "TIBEG" fix for the ILS DME RWY 35 in CYFB as "Teabag". AFAIK it's pronounced Tie-Beg.

There are lots of waypoints all over the world with the same name. But you are right, alot of them are based on the location.
