Rhinoplasty

Post by EagerFloater »

Hello, I am currently going to school working on my night rating and then CPL ...etc and supposedly going to be done come May, as long as things stay on schedule. I have had a breathing issues as well as an unsightly nose from multiple fractures over the years. I'm wondering if anyone else has gone through this while being a pilot?

My surgery will be pretty significant compared to some I've seen and obviously I won't be able to fly until things heal. I've had my first 2 appointments now, one the cosmetic Dr. and the other appointment with the Dr. which will be taking care of my breathing issues. These doctors will be tag teaming the surgery and have given me a recovery time of approx. 2 months (to when I can start flying.)

Now after my training I will be looking for my first job. If I get my surgery at the start of May, then it will be approx. July before I can start flying, not that I will necessarily find a flying gig right off the bat. Maybe, I'll be able to find a ramp job but I would like to be fit to fly as soon as possible. So if you have a similar story please do share.

I've been teased for most of my life about my nose :smt022 but I am now living in a province where this surgery is more accessible. So it will be nice to finally have this chapter of my life done and over with. I have so many other things that I should be worrying about like whether or not to get my float rating, can I move from the east coast to the west coast, go up north or leave Canada all together. :?

So, basically I don't even know where to start planning. I feel like I'll be missing on any summer hiring if I wait until I'm completely healed. Ok, I'm done, I just needed a rant.

I have no experience with rhinoplasty, but I cannot imagine that such an operation would be disqualifying (in the long term) so far as your aviation medical is concerned.

Best suggestion I can offer is to discuss the proposed surgery with your Aviation Medical Examiner - he or she might be able to give you additional aviation-specific information, for example, whether the recovery period might be a bit longer than for a non-pilot, due to the effects of pressure changes in flight, etc.

That's a good idea, it's about time I booked for my medical. Maybe I'll be able to get some info when I book it.
