Calm Air
Calm Air seems to have a need for some FO's quick.
Airline Pilot Central had upgrade times around 3-4 years. This sounds accurate to me as I have heard lots of captains hang up their jacket for good there.
They are asking for ATPLs, or IATRA. Does anyone know if they have any sort of co-captain program in place for FO's who get hired with IATRAs, to build PIC time for the A's?

Re: Calm Air
I'm curious where you got the impression Calm Air is in need of F/O's quickly? They seem to be desperate for dispatchers, but I haven't seen an F/O ad anywhere.
Re: Calm Air
You may want to look in the Job Ad forum as they are looking for F/O'sng78 wrote:I'm curious where you got the impression Calm Air is in need of F/O's quickly? They seem to be desperate for dispatchers, but I haven't seen an F/O ad anywhere.
Re: Calm Air
well that's fresh, hadn't checked in the last few hours and wasn't under the impression they were desperate for pilots. I've heard great things about Calm Air, so this is good news!

Re: Calm Air
Brings to mind a song by Peter, Paul and Mary..
Where have all Wasaya's Hawker drivers gone
Long time passing
Gone to Calm Air
Every one....
Git on it! Abandon ship. Leave the money and run! It's was dady's money anyway!

Re: Calm Air
Can't think of a better opportunity for folks sitting on current HS74 ratings. They should be lining the rail, like rats running down the dock lines on a sinking ship! Where else could CA get trained pilots FREE?
Take the above advice....and BAIL!!!

Re: Calm Air
Is Wasaya losing the Hawker flying? Is Calm Air even interested in flying the Hawker or are they not replacing that flying with ATR's? Also, aren't Wasaya Hawker pilots very well paid?
Re: Calm Air
Well, lets see...CA Is advertising for Hawker FO's, which would lead me to believe they need Hawker FO's.ng78 wrote:Is Wasaya losing the Hawker flying? Wasaya Hawker pilots are working for Wasaya. Ever worked for Wasaya? Didn't think so.

Nothing like the topic of Wasaya to bring Doc back on here to slam them. It was so nice while you were gone not moaning about Wasaya for a few weeks. Everyone knows you feel hard done by by Wasaya but no one wants to hear it. Believe it or not there are people that enjoy working for Wasaya and are happy there

I only know one pilot at Wasaya and he's a PC12 guy with tons of hours...and he hates it!frankfrank wrote:Nothing like the topic of Wasaya to bring Doc back on here to slam them. What little I do know is either not important or I've forgotten it!

Re: Calm Air
Calm Air is a unionized shop (a real union not a faux-union) so get in early and get yourself a seniority number. It's becoming pretty obvious that the Calm Air/Perimeter giant is going to take over Wasaya's flying in NW Ont.
Go now as an F/O and someday you'll be sitting to the left of your former captain. Isn't that the dream of every bullied cojo?
Plans are under way for a hangar in YQT. Probably YRL and YPL next.

Re: Calm Air
+1 to the above.
I'd hop all over this if I was in a position to apply. BTW, what is the schedule like? I noticed Airliners has the pay scale, but to completely understand the 'take home' including per diems it depends on the amount of days a month they work. I'd say it must be around 15 or so?
Great company in an equally great group of companies under EIF.

Re: Calm Air
It might have been asked before - Does Calm Air have a training bond??
Re: Calm Air
Anyone know what the schedule for each machine is? days off etc and # of overnights
Throttles to the wall

Please forgive me if I missed your sarcasm, but if there wasn't any, aren't you two guys the ones who cry "no bonds" and isn't this the attitude that creates them? Sounds like maybe you old fellas created this problem 25 years ago...we owe ya. Or I guess we owe them, $10G's.Where else could CA get trained pilots FREE? Take the above advice....and BAIL!!!
Back to the thread, supposedly a good company, all word of mouth.
Re: Calm Air
Pretty good place to work.
Schedule varies depending on the aircraft and base, but most everybody is home everynight. The schedule is bid based on seniority and a/c type and there is enough diversity among what people like that nobody really gets a bad schedule. Overnights generally get scooped up in the bidding process because there is a good per diem to go with it.
Equipment is good, so is the maintenance, and so is the flight training. The flight dispatch is being moved down to YWG, better access to qualified dispatchers I guess. The management on the flight ops side is stable, rational and respectable, and there is a good relationship between union and management. 10K bond, up front, paid back with interest over 2 years, pro-rated. You can find the payscales online.
Current hiring is mostly driven by additional aircraft arriving, although a few FOs have gone to WJ or on LOA in the past while, so there is a need for a few on each aircraft type. Thompson-based crews fly a lot of freight and fuel, along with some passenger stuff; Winnipeg based crews do mostly pax stuff, but the ATR side mixes it up a little bit. Upgrades for more junior guys seem to come more quickly as of late for those interested in bidding up to Thompson, but again, due to the variety in personalities few can’t complain and most people get what they want.
Pretty good place to work in general; some plan on moving on, some have made it their home. For those from Manitoba and have a family, it’s pretty tough to beat – you can earn well, make it home a fair bit, and the drama at work is pretty limited. The future looks positive too.

Re: Calm Air
Whats the Chances of me getting hired? w 1600 TT and 200 multi w some turbo prop hours?
Re: Calm Air
The minimums used to be 1500TT. I imagine there are alot of much higher time pilots who will be applying though.
Maybe not, I don't think I've ever seen them advertise on AVCAN, always thought they had a huge pile of resumes.

Re: Calm Air
Thanks for all the information (given by some users).
The rest of you...... Really? I don't know you personally but I have a mental picture of a few down on their luck "the world hates me" kind of people.

Yes, they have a program in place.BEFAN5 wrote:They are asking for ATPLs, or IATRA. Does anyone know if they have any sort of co-captain program in place for FO's who get hired with IATRAs, to build PIC time for the A's?
You would probably need between 1500-2000 hrs to be competitive. In the last group of guys hired the total time ranged from about 1300hrs up to 5000hrs but everyone had some multi turbine time.AJV wrote:Anyone know what the TT requirements are?
Many of the new spots that open up are in Thompson but there are opportunities to bid back to Winnipeg. Winnipeg spots are often filled internally by guys from Thompson who want to work in Winnipeg. That being said, they often hire for Winnipeg spots, it all depends what the needs are. Overall I think it's a great place to work!
