Cat:
What can I say .... for a change, I'm bereft for words.
It seems sometimes I'm watching a group of four year olds arguing in a sandbox over who is going to play with the dump truck.
That said, its pretty much the best thing we have going to act as a central clearing house for contact among the Canadian aviation fraternity.....and on top of that, there is a large segment of our industry that behave as if they were indeed four year olds playing in a sandbox .... but feeling they are being severely screwed over because somewhere in the country, someone is making 34 cents a day more in per diems than they are.
Unfortunately, the more people that I speak to in person about the AvCanada forums say they checked in for awhile, found it too infantile and won't be back ... too bad really.
In some ways its similar to the early days of TV broadcasting ... some saw it as an entertainment medium for shows like Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Our Miss Brooks, Leave It To Beaver. Others thought it should be for highbrow education of the great unwashed masses by playing lots of the Winnipeg Ballet and Rita MacNeil. The CBC still thinks that way.
This medium could be a wonderful place, time will tell where it ends up.....that is determined by its "viewers" just as the medium of television has become defined by what the ratings services show hits a sweet spot with the general populace.
On the topic of gross grammatical errors, and basic spelling mistakes and/or typos, it pains me every time I see one show up .... as if the post had been made by Jethro of the Beverly Hillbillies..... but that's just the way of the world isn't it?
Anyway Cat ... welcome back. Lots of us have missed you personally, and the contributions you make to the site based upon your considerable experience in the business.
Regards,
The Old Fogducker

Re: Pre adolescent forum.
O.F.D....
Those of us who have been around aviation long enough to be capable of leading by example should do exactly that.
For the new year lets try and refrain from posting anything that is below our self worth..
In other words ignore anything that seems aimed at getting a negative reaction.
It will be difficult though.

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Re: Pre adolescent forum.
I don't come to, and more so, hang around AvCanada for it's aviation base of knowledge, although there is a vast amount on here that have much to teach. I find it a virtual hanger in which to bullshit.
You'll often see me in the chat room's, as I've made some good friends and acquaintances there.

Re: Pre adolescent forum.
Cat, I fly to Nanaimo frequently, Departure Bay actually.
Bandaid, I flew for Northcoast Air, from May 87 to June 88, then moved to Powell River untill 04.
Now river at YVR. On holidays for now though.
As far as punctuation and spelling goes; sometimes I am not sure and I proof read every post but still miss some typo errors. Sensitive keys I guess.

Bob, I was a paramedic up in Rupert but was well gone by the time you got there. We also did most of our flying with Pacific Coastal while I was there.

You know what's been an absolute lifesaver on this forum, the ignore list. Completely blocks you from seeing any posts from a given user. I'm sure we can all think of someone who's posts you would of rather have never read.
Give it a try Cat, makes for nicer reading.
I just wish that it could block direct replies to said users.
Cheers

I am with Nark on this one. Back in the days when we could walk along the hangar lines and look at and touch parked planes, and before the introduction chain link fences and airport Nazis with their anti-smoking, drinking and driving, and their pro granola agendas, sitting around in the hangar was the way we youngins' learned. Nowadays, we have the internet. The difference is that face to face, most of the youngins quickly get their upcommance, however on the internet it seems common civility is not considered a prerequisite. Emotions can run just as high here as in the back of the hangar, the difference being the offended here cannot really do very much about it.
Sure there is some childish stuff . And certainly there are some posting who have no idea what they are talking about.. But honestly, how much more annoying are they really than a bunch of us old farts who simply think that because we have a few logbooks full of time, decades of experiences, and the biggest prostrates around, that we should continually have our egos stroked... Personally, I find it just as offensive when some old guy continually needs to remind everyone of their experience, age, how many hours they have flown, and what types, and use that as a basis of merit for all their thoughts. Sometimes us old guys get it wrong and can learn from the youngins.
As to the grammar and spelling....well lets put blame where blame belongs..the fact that there is no spellchecker here and too few moderators who are overworked and diverting resources to mundane things like libelous posts when they could be checking and correcting the grammar and spelling in all the posts. I hold them entirely responsable for errors in grammar and spelling in any of my posts.
Besides, if anyone really does not like it, simply dont become involved..I for one, make AvCanada checking pretty much part of my day......both good and bad.
And before any one labels me as young and brash, I can answer yes to all the qualifications. except for that spelling and grammar stuff.

A big + 1 The best post on this thread yet. All I add is, I am sure glad that I can fly better than I can typetrey kule wrote:I am with Nark on this one. Re: Pre adolescent forum.
Great post Fogducker...and as well as others.
Something wonderful has happened in my understanding of others' opinions. I have discovered that no matter how passionate we are about upholding and communicating a righteous mindset for decency vs opinion...few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are even incapable of forming such opinions. With this I now understand the mindset of not only my own, but of others. Not one is right. Not the other is wrong. Just different. I accept that and embrace the differences...and ignore the background noise.

I think it might have been IWBDs little helper that did the good job on him.beaverbob wrote:IWBD, those tibetan monks really did a good job.

Here he is in the pose "lotus metal" where he's chanting the lyrics from Pour Some Sugar on Me to attain a soft, yet rockin' outlook on the universe.
