Re: EI paid training??

Post by North Shore »

So since I had most of the money saved up from the job I had just got laid-off from, I went ahead and did my class IV anyway rather than wait 3 months for a possible no!

They even denied my EI this year because I quit a full-time job (not flying) to take a seasonal job (floats). They didn't really care that I took the seasonal job to try and further my career so that I wouldn't be needing EI and move-up from an unskilled full-time job in the bottom tax bracket....I guess they want to cut as much unemployment spending as possible now that we're this deep into the recession?
So, have you found a job as a Class IV yet?

As for the second part above, it's not about the money for the Government - one just has to look at the increases in spending/deficit in a 'Conservative' government - it's all about numbers and public perception. If they can get as many people off the EI rolls as possible, then they can publicly brag that their economic policies are working - "Just look at the employment numbers!" They could care less that Brain Surgeons are under-employed as 7-11 clerks, just that they now have a full-time job. The same was true of previous Liberal governments...

Funny this comes up,

Yes they do pay for training,
1)You must be on EI now
2)You must have proof of the cost for training/a letter from a school that you will do it with.
and
3)why you need this licence

My father started his Multi Yesterday as a matter of fact.

He did get laid off from his last job(Floats), so he is on EI, once he decided FINALLY that he wanted to get his multi we got the ball rolling. He did have to wait for a interview which I do think only took a month. Before the interview he had sent in the cost of the training, talked with the gentleman on the phone a few times to make sure that everything is in order so when he did the interview last week it was just a "What day do you wanna start?".

The thing now though is the government has cut the benefit down to only covering half unless it is only a couple grand(the multi-ifr is 14K, they pay half. The multi is 3500, there paying the full thing).

Also if you were a class 4 before you may have a hard time getting this as you are/were already qualified in that posistion.

Best of luck, they paid the full amount of my multi-ifr 9 years ago. Saved me a bundle and allowed me to do if full time.

Nope, no luck with my Class IV. It got me two interviews from schools I had visited previously, but did not get the job. And quite honestly I never thought of getting the rating for a "guaranteed job" anyway...quite the opposite. Which is why I didn't wait the three months, I thought there was a possibility they would figure that out anyway. I worked hard to save up that money so if they were willing to fund some or all of the training, then why not?

I couldn't agree more with your second part. Every interview I've gone for, flying or non-flying, there are always people with a lot more experience for me. And these are interviews for entry-level jobs! Nothing much I can do about that, just keep trying and stay positive. Something WILL happen in the new year! :D

flyinhigh, no, I did not have an instructor rating before I went to EI to inquire about funding.

flyinhigh,

I'd like to know more information about your father's situation. I was recently denied my application for a MIFR through second career. If his situation parallels mine, I might have a solid case for an appeal.
If you could give me some more info, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

RK
