Russia and the west has spent so much time in their country, doing stuff, yet we never hear a peep from an actual citizen? Does this seem strange to you, we only hear scripted stuff ?

I for one would like to hear their side of it. Nothing to be scared of. Are we in afghanistan for the afghani people, or for don cherry'?

Dash, I find myself agreeing with you again...although I am certain of my feelings at the conclusion, I would be very interested in hearing from citizens actually living the war without fear of reprisals from the local militias.

"Liberated Afghan?" Hmmm.

I'll be back there Monday for a while, and I can assure you we are doing nothing to help the average Afghan - by perpetuating an un-winnable war, we are in fact doing much to harm them, and lower their standards of living while pursuing other agendas. Lets not get carried away with ideas that have no truth just because you hear it on the news or it comes from the Gov't, I can assure you it's just not the case.

Nobody wishes the soldiers harm, but the context in which they operate is inexcusable for us a nation.

Glad everyone is back in the Cooler, have a great time, see ya'll next month when I get back.

The confusing part is, in Afghanistan there are troops from Canada, USA, Poland, England, Scotland, Italy, Germany, France, Australia and maybe more. All are fighting for freedom, for 9 years?

Damn those Afghanis must be something to outwit the entire western world for all these years! Just what is going on there? :? Will we ever know.

Here's an idea, keep our troops are home to keep an eye on our country and then use the money save to hire Blackwater to go over there!!! It is so sad to see boys from rural canada losing their lives over in rural afghanistan. Each and every week. Enough. Makes no sense.

We already know, it's actually not that hard to figure out once you put a few 2 and 2's together. The unfortunate part is the message fed to the general public through media, military, and gov't is severely skewed, and to be honest just full of misleading "facts," statements, and woefully incomplete representations of the situation.

If anyone is interested I could do another thread from there again this trip. I didn't bother a few months ago on the last visit given the state of Misc. at the time, but would be willing to post some thought provoking pieces and answer as many questions as I can if the response is worth the time it would take. We need people asking informed questions to those responsible for this situation, and that is why I go.

Let me know, and once all my visas are organized and I know for a fact I'm getting on my flight out on Monday, I can start something up. Due to some last minute excitement things are still a bit up in the air! Nothing like good planning being derailed by a few "suspect" visas and a pissing match with the UAE....

Have a great week,

George Orwell wrote about a war without end in Asia in 1949 in his book 1984.
In another era he would have been called a prophet as the writtings of Eric blair have been quite prophetic. He predicted the use of CCTV and other counter insurgency policies of a police state.
Civil liberties being taken away for your own safety ,think about that the next time some TSA /Catsa is touching your junk.
Would this get any press if Don Cherry did not support the mission. What if he asked for the boys to come home ???
Afghanistan has not known peace since the Chinese left in the fourth century. The Kushana ,the chief tribe of the Yueh-chi people of China ruled over much of North India,Afghanistan and Central Asia in the 1-3c AD
Perhaps the Afghanies will know peace when the Chinese come back ?
As China rises and reclaims its ancestoral lands starting with Tibet ,Mongolia.Nepal,Laos or Korea are also ancestoral lands of some of the many etnic groups that used to inhabit China.

edited to correct the dates(yes, i got the dates wrong)it was over thirty years since i read the History of the Kyber Pass that so give me a break

ISTP ... surely (Shirley) ... as our resident self-avowed, Godless Communist you can comment ..... or are you starting to go underground ... maintaining a low profile before engaging in another operative mission to capture and interrogate Moose and Squirrel?

Oh .... and its only fair to warn you .... I have you under surveillance. These are PC times, and the job of an intel officer is now a far more open process ..... after all, the left think "Connecting the dots" is as easy as a paint by numbers landscape scene. Hey Expat,

I was about to send you an email, but this will do I suppose! It looks like your spot so far is about the only place I won't be hitting on this trip... However, that may change.

I'll keep you posted, the whole thing is rather up in the air at the moment, and I just received another request this morning for some work over in Herat where my brother in law is stationed. We'll see how things turn out, but it would be good to see you.

Hope you're well, I'm just leaving for Toronto to get my visa, argh.

Cherry is the only Canadian "personality" to support our troops and cops, the rest usually support the perpetrators.
As an aside to this discussion, Cherry isn't the only "personality" who supports our troops, maybe just the most visible one to most Canadians. No pun intended. Rick Mercer would probably be the most visible of these, proving that even pinko liberals can support the troops.

+2 No one wins the Stanley Cup by getting in fights. I wish more teams would concentrate on hitting the net with the puck. These guys are supposed to be professionals! Is it too much to ask to see one tape to tape pass in a game anymore?

On the other side of things it must be really tough to be a Sens fan these days, I mean even the Flames beat them.... Not looking good. Sadly it was more of a competition of who was the worse team. :|

What OFD said. :smt041

I'm quite comfortable with making Don Cherry debate these people. That comes with the condition that any media personality with whom I disagree can be forced to use their airtime to debate their position with an orator of my choosing.

Hockey is a fantastic sport - when played clean, and skillfully. I'm not talking no-contact crap in the least, but the ref has got to aggressively call the penalities, or all hell is going to break loose. NHL refs don't call penalties, probably because fights are good for the ratings.

I don't think violence glorifies hockey in the least. It makes it really ugly, IMHO.

Show of hands: who here thinks Sidney Crosby's concussion is good for the game? If you think violent fights, blood and teeth on the ice, and serious long-term injuries are part of "the game", well, enjoy watching the game in your double-wide.

That was the website on my profile for years before I wrote my lame book that would never be published and I just slammed it on a free blog site.

But yeah, that's where the handle comes from, and that's some old intel, I gotta say.

It's the first google hit for "istp", too. Most pilots fit that description.

Oh well, you're retired. I'll let it slide. If you want real intel, come to Sudbury, and we'll have a beer.

shitdisturber wrote:What pisses me off about these idiots is the automatic assumption that Don supports the war in Afghanistan. I don't know one way or the other but I suspect he probably doesn't. What Don does support unfailingly is the troops; the people that go where they're ordered to go by various uncaring, manupulative, political parties; and sadly and inevitably die for political expediency as a result. While I don't necessarily agree with a lot of things he does say on a wide range of topics; what he does for the people in uniform, as someone said, the only one who does, earns him my respect and thanks.
I would be all up to see Don tear them a new a$$hole....errr I mean debate them.
Hedley wrote:Sure, but can they sing?

Hedley, 2 derrogatory slangs in here. Better pull this video link before the same SOB who is trying to get the Dire Straits song pulled figures it out as well. Before you know know it we will all be back to reading Dick and Jane and watching Mr. Dress Up. Oh wait can't call him Dick, better change that to Richard and Jane and I heard Mr. Dressup could of been mistaken for a cross dresser.
The Old Fogducker wrote:Finally ... Dash Ate made a post that at least has the aroma of common sense. Unfotunately still falls short of a real meal of common sense served on a platter.

Dash, your sentiments of fighting for your city and way of life would be way too little and waaaayyyy too late if you wait til your city is in the process of being overun by "The Godless Hordes" going door to door slitting throats and raping every female before killing them. Then they drag every male between the ages of about maybe 10 and 70 out into the street and machine gun them ... leaving the bodies in the street to rot as an example to all who can see.

Our long held doctrine of killing "those people" over there before they get onto our continent to surround your city and for the very first time in your life prompt you to think there finally is somebody in the world who is evil, and really do want to kill you.

Fighting them well before they are gang raping your daughter before slowly slitting her throat while you're forced to watch is an infinitely more sensible plan in my way of thinking .... but that's exactly the kind thinking and action you think is unwarranted .... doubtless because you think that dropping some water into a gas tank, or stuffing a potatoe into an exaust pipe would cause "those people" to decide its time to go home so we can all just live in peace and sit around the campfire having a sing-along right?

There really is evil and tyranny in the world Dash..... and it really is the right thing to do to kill them.

The Old Fogducker
OFD, wonderful words of wisdom once again. More of you better start paying attention to this gentlemen. Me thinks he knows what he is talking about.

See this one is okay because he corrected himself and included everyone, even the Ir!$h. And as far as the 1st video goes I would not worry about that, it took them over 26 yrs to figure out that this could be offensive. I figure you have at least that long before the link is taken down on what you submitted.

Summary of Politically Incorrect Words from Blazing Saddles and Dire Straits which are not eligible for use in Canada:

f_gg0t (according to the revisionists, the MiG-15 never existed, and the Brits never smoked cigarettes)
ch1nks
ir1sh
n_gger (used as an insult millions of times daily by people with a better tan than I, which is PC)

It's a good thing Don Cherry never uses any of these words!

Not trying to stir the pot here, just genuinely curious, but had you any experience in Afghanistan prior to our (Canada's) involvement there? I understand you have a small amount of first-hand knowledge of the situation there recently, but can the same be said about when the Taliban was in control? I can appreciate that conditions there are poor in many senses of the word, but are they really worse off now? I find that hard to believe, but I admit my relative ignorance of the situation, and would be curious to know how a people could be better off under the rule of a notoriously oppressive group. I recently heard a segment on a CBC radio program concerning a new Afghan TV show called The Mask in which Afghan women discuss their struggles and the abuses they endure. Surely this is a major step forward in the rights of women and must indicate a shift, even if it's only a small one, towards a more socially progressive way of life over there? This certainly would never have happened under the Taliban.

As far as Don Cherry goes...whether or not he supports the mission in Afghanistan is irrelevant. He supports the troops who are thousands of miles from home, away from their loved ones and whose lives are in danger. There is a difference. It would be nice if more people could put the partisan BS aside and realize that.

And as for fighting in hockey, every time I hear someone say it doesn't belong in the game, I can't help but think they don't know a thing about the game. I don't always agree with the context of many of the fights nowadays. In particular the ones that seem to be creeping into the game more and more are the ones that occur after a big hit, even if it's a clean one. However, to suggest that in a game as fast, physical and intense as hockey, that guys aren't going to get heated and at some point boil over into a fight, is nonsense. Fighting will always have a place in a game like hockey.
