If you are a commercial pilot do not post your real name on this forum unless you are done with aviation ( ie retired or moved on to another line of work). The industry is small enough that an opinion honestly stated could be taken the wrong way by a potential employer. I see no reason to take the risk.......
However just because you are posting under a username you should still behave as if your mother was reading every post
Another way of looking at things - that might be better so far as the quality of discussion here in the forums is concerned - is to go ahead and use your name, but just be judicious about what you write.
Funny, just before reading this I posted something related in another thread:
I do want to point out that there are various reasons for anonymity on forums like this. For me, I like to remain anonymous, although some people on here know who I am. I recently revealed where I work simply because I was tired of the misinformation (either false or grossly outdated) about my place of work and thought it worthwhile for people to know some real facts, even though they may or may not suit them specifically. We each pick our poison. Anyways I digress.
Some people like anonymity for the reason you stated, to hide behind it while they say things and sling mud that they wouldn't normally be brave enough to say, or to say some really ridiculous things for the simple purpose of troublemaking. But personally, I stand by everything I say and would be happy to say the same thing to anyone in person. However, this forum is a nice pastime for me, but I can easily just turn it off and not thing about the stupid politics and issues in this industry. It's a small industry, and aviation is a big part of my life. These two factors mean that my friends are also usually in the industry and I likely know a lot of people on this forum, however I don't want to necessarily get into these debates and discussions in person where I cannot turn it off. Also, I am more conscience to the fact that although I stand by my opinion, I don't want someone who disagrees with me to have it affect how they treat me. I'd like to think I wouldn't treat them different, but I know this isn't true for everyone. As such, I leave my pastime in the computer world.

Well said KK7 and although I have not hidden behind anonymity on the forums (it would be pretty easy to find out who I am from my posts) and having several friends that I know "in real life" on the boards as well, I realize that my posts were sometimes confrontational. I am going for a fresh start and have said that I will do my best to turn the new leaf and not purposely stir the pot for anything less than egregious errors.
I don't write any thing here I wouldn't say face to face
Me too. I think.
Would Air Canada or Westjet not hire me, because of what I've said here? Probably. Do I care? Not in the least
Regardless, everyone knows who I am, and where I am, and I'm happy with that. Feel free to stop by anytime and we'll wander around and look at some neat airplanes. If it's a nice day I'll probably be flying at least one of them.
