Nope I haven't, although I've lost a job or two to better qualified pilots/human beings that also happened to look better than me. But I didn't go posting slander about that particular company on Avcanada.HavaJava wrote:
Anyone else heard of this sort of "preferential" treatment for the finer looking females?
I think you've been slightly misinformed.
Sorry the job didn't work out bucky...but you only have yourself to blame.
I like airplanes.
That situation can, and will happen anywhere. It's unfortunate, but most of us guys have a difficult time shutting off that part of the brain.
I'd be willing to bet the reverse problem happens more frequently though. "Sorry Suzy, this job involves alot of loading and un-loading of the aircraft, and well you do have pretty nails..."
And I have heard from more than colleague who has been told flat out that she will advance quicker if she does "extra" work for the boss.

Good call Donald,
I've seen the reverse happen so many times over the years, if they catch a break once in a while, well good for them. As long as they perform well and are not discriminated against by the employer once hired, then I have no issues.
Being a woman in this industry is not something I'd wish on my worst enemy, it's a tough row to hoe. A few breaks now and again are most certainly allowed.

Good point Donald,
I agree it is most definitely NOT fair if such a candidate was hired over another because of gender...but how many times do we see discimination in so many other forms...small men missing out over larger guys because of "loading the airplane". Better looking, taller guys can also be chosen first, whether consciously or not.
This is just another possible case in this archaic industry that is rife with these incidents. Its just easy to point out this obvious case.
Perhaps said female was hired because of said looks...but maybe she had a friendly personality, better qualifications outside of flying time. One thing that sure disgusts me is mention of her anatomy in this regard...Cmon guys, I like fun as much as anyone else, but this thread had some hints of malice in it.
I'm just tired of hearing people rant on about how they didn't get the job, and blaming it on the world. Take a look at yourself first, and quit looking for excuses. Did ya really want to work for this company anyways after this story? Perhaps they did you a favour.

If you don't get a job, suck it and get back on the phone. The world can be harsh and unfair. Deal with it, don't blame it on everyone else.
Besides, something better is just around the corner.
Cheers.

Not sure the casting couch is as prevalent as some would believe...there are certain ways to behave in interviews (and whacking off your bra or pulling down your pants doesn't work).
Whether you're in it for operating big metal or contributing to the Canadian aviation industry in other ways...one of the crucial no-nos is to go away bitter and twisted when you've been turned-down...and even worse bad-mouthing will only get you in the end...
Another huge mistake - thinking the only thing that matters is you can get a plane up and down in one piece, and you have enough hours under your belt... (Taken as granted actually)
Here's the list to be ticked off
Got enough hours and appropriate rating
Landed Immigrant or Citizen
Not a looney tune or been locked up for anything - gotta have that security check!
Doesn't have terminal conditions or illness or likely to fail medicals
Team player
Communication skills
Grooming (yes grooming; go for an interview with snot on your face, and a pair of dirty boots, and you WON'T get hired)
Has done research on the outfit, knows the industry, knows where he/she wants to be
Asks some good questions
Has a good sense of humour
Sorry to be a bore, but you want a job that badly, do the homework...

My love life is terrible. The last time I was inside a woman was when I visited the Statue of Liberty
I read through this thread, and I see a lot of good posts, however there are some sentiments, which are missed, or frowned upon. I do feel bad for whoever gets tossed aside so someone else can get hired, but there are factors that people don’t' consider.
Employers MUST hire minorities in Canada, that is a fact of business. I'm not being racist or sexist here but if two people of equal qualifications are applying for the same job, the visible minority will be hired 8 times out of 10. One reason for this is because that minority will actually have a case against the business in court if they are not hired, and because they were of equal worth it must have been discrimination... now my views on this are different because how can you not discriminate about some things, and so quickly discriminate about someone who doesn't have 10,000 hours...etc... But that's another story.
Anyways, it's not always the case, but there are incentives for businesses to hire visual minorities... a friend of mine (a woman) right out of getting her commercial was offered a position as long as she got her ifr rating by a certain date... she didn't and the position went to another 250 hour wonder. Who also happened to be female and it was made aware to both of them that they were being hired over everyone else who had more hours just because they were female, and the company wanted to look good because the were hiring more then just your 22-35y/o white male.
Looking into this i know that to be a supplier to nasa you must have a certain percentage of minorities working for your company. And it even gets more complicated to be a supplier to Cessna, simply put they ask you what your minority status is. They ask if the company is female owned, or veteran owned, or owned by a visual minority. I suppose that's great for the black female war veteran but for the rest of the population... that's being discriminated against.
So to finish this off, all of you who get passed over and think the only reason is because she had breasts or because the other guy was a different colour... that's not necessarily the case, they could be more qualified, or you performed poorly in the interview.
For those of you who said this sort of thing can't happen because it's only based on experience, and that person was ONLY hired because they were more qualified... well you're being foolish, that's not how the government allows businesses to run in Canada.

You guys went on a real tangent here with the minority argument.
HavaJava implied that a certain individual was hired with less than the 'hard minimums' that the employer told him, and many others, that they must have before being considered for the job.
Its understandable that he would be upset if that person was hired with less than the required experience because they are not equally qualified.
Sadly, I have seen this happen at least once at two of they places I have worked.
I do believe that it is only right to hire someone based on qualifications and not their gender, especially if you advertise a certain required amount of experience.
Havajava, its good that you pointed this out, but don't go on a rampage over it because it will only start to look bad on you.

I was hired because of my dashing good looks and not, as rumour has it, because of my brains.

HavaJava...a few questions for you....
-did you apply to this company?
-do you know the details as to how this young lady got the job?
-did you drive across 2 provinces to hand deliver your resume to this operator and others looking for work?
-are you positive that this pilot does not have the requirements?
-are you positive that the only reason she got the job was that she was female?
-if a male pilot was in the same situation would you post it on avcanada?
First of all be very careful about what you post on the internet....you quite obviously do not know details and are bitter and jealous...buddy get used to it...that's life. Instead of making yourself look like a jackass why don't you get to work...build your hours...network...get your resumes out and most of all...keep your mouth shut.

a) never applied because I didn't have the "minimums requirements"
b) don't know the details except that she "knew someone"
c) driven across 6 provinces looking and found a job in my own backyard (go figure)
d) she said that she didn't...but maybe she was lying
e) no, for all I know she got the job because she was a good friend of someone
f) I just get frustrated when a company attributes their minimum requirements to the ministry (health, natural resources, etc) and tells all kinds of people who don't have the multi time that they automatically don't qualify. Then they hire someone below mins because they are a friend of the boss, are hot, buy a PPC, or whatever else. That's life I know...but I think it kind of says something about the company.
I've cooled off a bit since my first post and am no longer too bitter. I guess you've got to use everything you've got to your advantage and I can't blame any girls for trying to use a little friendly flirtation. Mental Vomit accused me of slander...and I did no such thing. I mentioned no names or companies. If someone happened to guess the company from the minimums I mentioned then I think we can all agree that minimums don't really matter in the end so this could be ANY company.
