For Sale - our Chinooks - as Afghanistan mission ends . . .

Post by bizjets101 »

National Defence has put "For Sale" signs on the air force's Chinook helicopters in Afghanistan -- two years after taxpayers shelled out $282 million to buy them.

(1 shot down, one leased from USA - 5 for sale)

It would make just too much sense to bring them home to fill the search and rescue gap or heli shortage.

I know I know it's the federal government.

Of course you know everything surrounding the decision. It would be more expensive to bring them back than to leave them there.

I'd like to see them brought here but I'll have to come back later if I'm going to pretend I have any clue about how we can afford it.

I'm going to have to agree that it would be more expensive to buy fuel to bring them back than to just abandon them. Do we just pretend the purchase cost was rental?

This country has never had a plan for the military. They always do things ad-hoc. That is the problem.

Actually, the Chinook program is one thing we did right.

We developped a need we didn't have before. Flying over Afghan terrain is safer than going by road. We needed troop transport. The Griffon wasn't suitable for the job, therefore we opted for the Chinook. To get new ones, it would have taken us too long, so we elected to buy used Chinooks at a reduced price, probably knowing they wouldn't come back. We would get experience on the Hooks and when Hookers get back to Canada, we have corporate knowledge on the machine already.

Chinook program 1, 2, or 3!!!!!

We had our Chinooks from the 70's that Mulroney sold to the Dutch,

Then Harper had to buy 40 year old refurbished CH-47D's for Afganistan,

and . . . I don't really follow too much about helicopters but aren't we

still getting the 15 CH-47F's starting in 2013.

Instead of 'giving away' our 5 CH-147D's - shouldn't we at least keep

them until their replacement arrives???

We are still getting the F's aren't we????

Chinook 2 and 3 as you describe it is pretty much the same effort. 2 was a fill gap for 3.

If we can find a buyer, it doesn't make any financial sense to bring the old Hooks back in Canada. They would be pretty much useless as they are worlds apart from the ones we are getting soon... From what I hear, the ones in Afghanistan are maintenance hogs. We don't need them right away post-afghanistan. No sense in spending money on something we do not need.

I'm going to get banned and climb the tower with one of Hedley's high powered rifles soon enough.

Can't Paul Martin's kids build a boat that the military can use to bring the things back? Are they that worn out? Not the right colour? WTF?!?

Some back room bologna sandwich is going on here and they're going to magically get sold back to the 'mericans arn't they?

But if this were just a temporary thing, how come when 147202 got shot down in Afghanistan we leased one from the US - why didn't we just lease all 6 of them??? Why would we buy them, knowing we were just going to sell them.

After all we are there because of the Americans, why couldn't we have just said, give us six helicopters then we'll go!!!!

Wonder who got the kick backs and commissions on 282 million dollar side deal????

Pity Jack Lamb isn't still around, he'd git 'er done. He ferried a DC-3 back from Kabaul and he wasn't even endorsed on the machine, with his wife as co-pilot. :)

Hmmm according to press, the DoD has refused to tell us how much they paid to lease one CH-47D after 147202 was shot down last summer. Must be an awful lot!!!!

Also the CH-147F's for 15 helicopter plus 20 years of maintenance they have budgeted $4.7 Billion dollars at the time of the order.

'zactly send me over, fuel and load the first one with rations and water. I'll figure out how it works on the way back. If I survive you'll most likely have at least 2 of them home on the cheap.

Conversely Hedley and I will personally buy them for... (how much you got for this Hedley?)

We'll get back to you with our bid.

I'll probably lease them out after I buy them but you'll have to outbid the military they have pretty deep pockets.

See, I really like these helicopters, and I totally want to buy them from you. But the thing is the guy down the street is willing to knock 5% off and throw in free rustproofing.

Why don't you go back and talk to your manager and see if we can't come to an agreement, and I'm thinking I'm going to want you to throw in the extended warranty for free.

Yes,

We are still getting the "F" models. Flew on couple the last few days, very nice machine with insane capabilities over the "D's," with much better reliability.

I heard yesterday who might be buying them... It won't be logging.

My guess we'll sell them cheap, probably finance the deal - only options for sale would be to;
UK, USA, Italy, UN, Afghanistan, or just leave them in the desert!! Or back to Boeing.

These may be refurbished but these choppers are old, delivered in the mid 1960's!!!, and have been upgraded from CH-47A's, to C's, to D's - all high time and closing in on 50 years old!!!!!!!

An example would be CH147D 147204 - it was delivered to the US Army on July 16th 1965 (CH-47A), and deployed in Vietnam - rather than bring it back to America it got sold to Thailand. It was then returned to Boeing in 1983, and redeployed as a CH-47D in 1985 to US Army Ft. Campbell, Kentucky.

Then sold to Canada!!!! What a steal, only 282 million for 6 45 year old helicopters. So what do you think, 120 million for 5 - no money down, zero interest - no warranty.

The helicopters Mulroney sold were 10 years newer than these ones!!!

Hedley must be too busy on the jeep forum.

Niss and I would like to Offer $35 000 for the 5 with the zero down, zero interest and we will consider accepting them as is, where is, with no warranty expressed or implied. Though as mentioned we'd rather the extended warranty was included as a guesture of good faith. We heard you Canadians are good guys, eh.
