Just out of curiosity, how many people were in your class and how many have found gainful employment in aviation? What far off lands did they have to relocate and/or commute to for work in this glorious industry?Mr-fix-it wrote:I graduated in december from the diploma program in Winnipeg. I graduated from Stevenson (Winnipeg campus) Dec. 2010. Went into the program with no prior aviation background but left very confident. Instructors are great also. 40% off Snap-On deal is pretty sweet also.

40% off Snap-on?!?! Hows that work?
Re: Stevenson Aviation AME program info
While you're in school you get 20-40% off Canadian list prices, which are already about 20% higher than US prices, on tools needed for your classes. No ordering two of anything or stuff obviously not for aviation. You pay in advance, no credit, then wait, and wait, and wait, and maybe your tools will show up before you graduate. I know a few that graduated and still don't have everything they ordered. Its done through the industrial side, not the truck that drives around avoiding anyone needing warranty. The assclown that runs the program likes to tell all the noobs that only snap-on is allowed to be used on aircraft.azimuthaviation wrote:40% off Snap-on?!?! Hows that work?

Funny how two people responded and neither will say if they got a job in aviation.

Doesn't sound like that sweet of a deal at all. Basically youre buying straight from the factory and skipping the driver's markup, Snap-on doesnt lose a penny. And after shipping it probably works out the same.
It seems like schools are turning out diplomas as fast as airline sickness bags and theres no place for them all to go.
Re: Stevenson Aviation AME program info
They are now set up to run six classes at the same time. This works out to a class of 16 graduating about every 3-5 months. The only things saving them are about half are international students planning on moving, and a high percentage of grads not knowing which end of a screwdriver to hold. Maybe a third of the class shows some real promise, the rest shouldn't be working on anything more complicated than a weed whacker. To be fair to Stevenson, they are starting a new system that's supposed to weed out the idiots early on and send them packing.azimuthaviation wrote:It seems like schools are turning out diplomas as fast as airline sickness bags and theres no place for them all to go.

My class graduated from Stevenson with 13 people, of those 1 has shifted out of aviation slightly and now works for Standard Aero, I know 7 are still employed and licensed engineers, the other 5 I have lost touch with and am not sure what happened to them.

the 40% is a nice way to start off in the industry but took 6 weeks to get all of the tools purchased...tyndall wrote:While you're in school you get 20-40% off Canadian list prices, which are already about 20% higher than US prices, on tools needed for your classes. UM UMPH WILL SAY SAVE YOUR MONEY GO TO NLC(NORTHERN LIGHTS COLLEGE) DAWSON CREEK B.C
small quality focused and tough 19 start the first semester 16 pass instead of 45 start and 12 grad
selection is fair n tough /least that was back in the day
my class now have owner wood buffalo heli// owner in yql maintenance // 2 directors of maintenance and 5 of the the most visually gifted ame ' s I have ever seen( outside of my own father how could change a ole ceco fuel control in and out in 20 min on a bell206 b ) guys that can pick up a fcu or other complicated assembly and know without manuals how it and it little parts interact though they use them to confirm the quality of the work ie a pilot checklist do n confirm //can trouble shoot so fast it makes the bean counters pee them selves with glee at the low labour cost. isn't that right eh darren . /ervis // michelle //
though d.c. is small the cost is affordable vs ywg. it does have its own charms, ski weekends at silver king unbelievable powder sking most yrs. you really know the staff n fellow students
think of your class a a family of 15 brothers n sisters with a weird uncle thrown in for effect.
to be fair their are some great instructors at the steveson program , the program is accomodating to those who have family commitments . and paycheck wise not stopping to go to to school for 15 -18 months straight .
it all comes down to your personal requirements to match the school with educational goals and that elusive balance in aviation for family and work. apply early and choose wisely best of success in your choice

Re: Stevenson Aviation AME program info
I graduated in june, 2011. I agree with the others in that the instructors are great and the classes are well planned out. I was really surprised by the training offered compared to the cost of tuition and can see why it's well respected.
That said, with the school now running 6 classes, it was getting crowded around the resources it has. Not to mention adding to the flood of apprentices in a job market that presently isn't looking for apprentices.
As far as I know, only 1 person from my class (out of 9 that graduated) has found work in aviation so far, and even then it was with the RCAF.

Seems to me from all the threads on AME programs here, you might as well apply through the RCAF to start with.Mattimus wrote:As far as I know, only 1 person from my class (out of 9 that graduated) has found work in aviation so far, and even then it was with the RCAF.

If you have no problem getting Apprenticeship placement go that route. EI pays your way and your only gone from home for 9 weeks out of the next 4 years.

Re: Stevenson Aviation AME program info
If you can get an employer to sponsor you as an apprentice, take the 4 section Gov. of MB subsidized program. Go to Southport for 9 weeks at a time and get EI while you're there as well as a travel and living away from home subsidy. I graduated there in Dec 2010 and would definitely recommend it. The instructors are all good guys with lots of experience and knowledge. The class size is 12 ppl and breaking it up over 4 years is easier on the wallet than going for 15 months straight and then looking for a job.
