One person died and another was injured in the crash of a small plane during a snowstorm near the Maine-Quebec border on Monday.
The four-seat Diamond DA-40 went down in a remote wooded area in Somerset County in Maine.
Steve McCausland, with the Maine Public Safety Department, said the plane had left Halifax for Quebec earlier and was likely on its way back.
He said the pilot reported icing in the afternoon. Later, the plane's emergency responder went off.
A Cormorant and a Hercules aircraft from the airbase in Greenwood, N.S., were sent to the crash site Monday night.
The survivor was airlifted to a hospital in Quebec with undetermined injuries, an official with the Department of National Defence told CBC.
Crews with the Maine Warden Service will try to get to the site on Tuesday. They couldn't get through the snow-clogged logging roads.
"We had snowmobiles get stuck last night," said Lieut. Kevin Adam, who is with the service. "We put in a really, really hard effort, but we just had to pull out."
Between 50 and 70 centimetres of snow fell in the area on Monday.

Heh Tim,
You've correctly posted the story!!!
I purposely posted in General Topics - as it is not only a current event news worthy - it is also a Buttonville based aircraft - where many AvCanada readers frequent the YKZ airport.
Very few would be scanning the 'crash' section - and I think it is worthy to get the information out of a lost friend for those who may not otherwise hear about it.
I certainly appreciate your post, and would rather have a double post any day, as opposed to no post at all.
Aircraft was a Diamond DA-40 C-GPDO.

I believe I saw this plane in a hanger at YHZ this weekend, based on the discussion then and what the news is reporting.
I'm guessing icing on something that smooth would be very bad news.

That's unfortunate - best wishes to the survivor for recovery, and condolences to family and friends of both.

It is very bad news (not that it's not for other small aircraft not equipped/certified for icing, but that long high aspect ratio fancy wing does NOT like ice). No such thing as a "little ice" on that airplane, can get very bad very fast... Also seems to be susceptible to tailplane stall, though that's not documented anywhere. So I've heard, at any rate.Pavese wrote:I'm guessing icing on something that smooth would be very bad news.![]()

For some good news, I have been told the pilot seems to be doing well and should pull through.
