Re: Your First Hour
That ole bird is still flying, awesome. My 1st flt too, Have to get back to you but it was beginning of July, 1988. It was an ugly bile yellow / orange colour. But it was the best airplane in the fleet of the good ole EFC. It spun the best of all of them too. Had alot of fun with it in the practice area. But back then we didn't have mack daddies.ditar wrote:November 6, 2004. C-152 C-GYJJ @ CYXD, A. Thomas/Self
I was told that I'm "the 'mack daddy' of straight and level flight"
Kowalski: Sir, we may be out of fuel.
Skipper: What makes you think that?
Kowalski: We've lost engine one, and engine two is no longer on fire.

Re: Your First Hour
First hour in ANY airplane: Piper Cherokee over Niagara Falls
First Logged hour: Cessna 172
I know, both pretty boring, sleepy, non-eventfull aircraft

Ok, you beat me slightly. Very first flight in an aircraft was in the ass end of a Yukon or possibly North Star, probably a Yukon; Trenton to wherever we landed in Germany, I'm guessing Duesseldorf, sometime in 1965 at the ripe old age of two. For some reason I don't remember the flight but I do remember flight number two in 1968 when the trip was reversed.Moose47 wrote:For me it was on the 20th of August, 1973 at C.F.B. My very first flight in an aircraft was in the ass end of an R.C.A.F. Fairchild C-119G Flying Boxcar. I was an airforce dependant and we went from R.C.A.F. Unit Fort Churchill to Winnipeg on the 7th of February, 1961 at 13,000 feet. Brrrrr!

There were a number of early flights with flying farmer neighors, then a fam flight, but the first one in the log is:
1975-11-20 PA28-140 WEH Brian Findlay 1-2-3-4-5 YQR
RIP Fin. I was blessed to have started off with a true professional flight instructor.

C-172 C-GCVO of the ottawa flying club. Had a blast. Hoping to put some time in at Smiths Falls before I head to Confederation in September.
Or even just stand by the runway with my thumb stuck out in case anyone is looking for a passenger

That would have been a Yukon from No. 437 'Husky' (T) Squadron.
Trenton to Lahr in 13 hours.

Flying is better than walking. Walking is better than running. Running is better than crawling. All of these however, are better than extraction by a Med-Evac, even if this is technically a form of flying.

Re: Your First Hour
Close, but it wasn't Lahr. We were posted to Soest and the bus ride between the base and the airport was fairly short; that much I remember from the return trip. That's why I'm guessing Duesseldorf; that and I have a vague memory of my mother having mentioned it in the last decade or so. This was of course before we moved the brigade out of the north and down to Lahr.Moose47 wrote:<<<Ok, you beat me slightly. Re: Your First Hour
Hey shitdisturber:
I know you were too young at the time but was someone in your family involved with the AOP Troop based in Fort Prince of Wales (Soest, Germany)?
Many guys don't know about Canadian Army L-19s operations with the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. It's actually very interesting part of our aviation history that's not talked about.
