Smokers save society money.
They die earlier, before burdening the healthcare system with the usual expensive ailments of advanced age-knee replacements, kidney failure, cataracts, nursing homes, etc etc.

Dead smokers do not collect their full social security and/or pension benefits-
- they pay into public pensions , and croak before withdrawing as much as non-smokers.

Again though, this raises the question. If tobacco is in fact such a burden on the health care system, why are they not promoting preventative treatment and assisting in removing tobaco use?

This strikes me as the most basic of routes to take. Heroin needles are free, but heaven forbid you receive medication to stop an equally addictive destructive habit.

There is a distinction between "paternalism" and "cooperation".

Insurance is a form of cooperative, whether run by private industry, the government, or a citizen association. A very large number of people pool their money, and in return, should they incur a catastrophic expenses, those will be paid from the pool.

Cooperatives have to have rules: who gets to participate, how the fees are structured, what qualifies for payouts and how much... etc., etc. These rules are not "paternalism"; they are necessary to ensure that revenue balances expenditures.

So the issue boils down to what kind of cooperative do you prefer....

Some of them siphon off part of the revenue as profit to third-party shareholders (above and beyond the compensation of executives and staff). Some of them don't.

Some of them write rules to suppress membership of those people who they don't like ... for example, people with pre-existing conditions. Others open membership universally to all comers.

In many, the member has no say in who writes the rules or what is in them. In others, he can lobby to have the rules changed to reflect his needs better... or even replace the idiots who wrote the rules in the first place.

So pick your poison.

How does smoking a cigarette affect me after a workout at the gym? I know there are negative effects from smoking, ya, but are there any inherent traits of cigarette smoke that will affect results from lifting weights?

It has been asked on other forums, here are some of the responses:
http://www.fight-smoking-team.org/how-d ... t-the-gym/
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/oldnewthing/arc ... 57869.aspx
Found these after a quick internet search. The information is out there is you are willing to take a couple of hours to have a look (between cigarette breaks).
Just off the top of my head I would think that after a workout your blood vessels would be dilated and your blood pressure increased this would increase osmotic pressure and allow more of the circulating poisions that come with cigarettes into the cells. I am not too sure what happens to the vessels that supply blood when they have a buildup of lactic acid from the workout, this may increase the permability of the cells. Lots of research out there, take some time and learn.

Go tell this to my Grandma, 93 years old and two packs a day since her 20's, except maybe during WWII. I think she will die in the next two weeks if she ever stop smoking.

On the other side it cost my dad his life at 54....To balance things....

Coal plant emissions probably kill as many people as cigarettes ever did. 30 000 a year in the USA alone. And 600 000 asthma attacks.

Smoke up, it's good for ya.

One third of all cancers are caused by that deadly carcinogen oxygen. We should ban oxygen.
