well -40c in a 172 is definately toooo cold// but the boss was a lunatic so what's a low timer gone a do in the middle of a 5yr aviation recession/
met a guy with a 414 nicely equipped in 2006 running into the cold wx bug aboos
unofficial of course but sujjested he use aluminium tape to block part of the oil cooler
and record the ops temps at different alt's and speed s themn build him self a chart
if the oat warmed up remove more of the tape record again then if colder than a witch a... ad more // record the temps again .
he said by the end of the winter he had it down great as to how much he should restrict direct ram air over the oil cooler and still provide proper cooling .
he is now flyn a c510 in ab way to go kev

You might want to watch out with that one, all it take is flying into a different air mass and having things over heat while airborne on a 3-4hr trip going from a -40 location to -10. There is a reason why things need to be approved and paper work done.

-35 and I can't be arsed. Feck.
Yes you can put winter fronts on. Whatever. Early in the winter all that ambient moisture in switches, cables whatever will freeze. Solenoids don't work. Those little limit switches in the flaps, good luck. Even if they do work, just wince as they laboriously eke their way down the tracks. If it was going, when the cold wx hits it will be gone.
Throw a buncha big working dudes in to the cabin, give a briefing, fire up and too late, every window frosty. Sure if the janitrol works you can see straight ahead. If its a Cessna you'd better shave the windshield with a credit card for departure and then hopefully you get some airflow.
So yah it can be done, but the longer I see a guy running a piston 703 show the less likely he is to take winter work, and the more he'll charge. Just not worth it.
Winter makes me love turbines and bleed air so much...
