Re: jazz pilots pay the mortgage off fast
Perhaps one reason that Jazz is looking at "non-traditional" business opportunities, like the 757 vacation charter business, to guarantee its own sustainability and not having all the proverbial eggs in one basket. Likewise I appreciate why Air Canada, as a business (and not one with a necessarily guaranteed future), is going "shopping" when the contract ends.
I think the only stability in Canadian aviation can be found in the form of a large airmass . . . in the arctic region over the dead of winter.

If anyone thinks they have a secure job in aviation they are dreaming.
AND if this " little birdie " is in management, they especially are dreaming thinking they will be around in 8 years, most will have robbed air canada blind and left for the ACE pasture long before their fifth year

Let me fix that for you:
Job security is the knowledge that you are underpaid at your current job.
I know, I know. Too right wing. I will go back to making the sun go down, by killing kittens, and writing poems lamenting the retirement of BUZZ Hargrove.
People lecture me endlessly about their need for "job security". Words fail me.If anyone thinks they have a secure job they are dreaming

Isn't it blindingly obvious, though?
Re: jazz pilots pay the mortgage off fast
Who else has the fleet capabilities to challenge the CPA? Air Canada could have just NOT renewed the agreement past 2015 if they were concerned with saving money. I really don't see companies going out in the next 5 or 6 years expanding their fleet to bid on a possible CPA with AC. Very unlikely.
Jazz is not expanding there areas of business just because they know there's a probability of loosing the CPA. The CPA being a huge piece of the pie for their business venture, isn't in Jazz's best interest to loose. They have the infrastructure in place and if anything pisses off a AC customer, is service interruptions by AC when they possibly switch from one carrier to the next. You have to remember Jazz was once owned by AC, and I am sure they have an agreement in place to work in the best interest of both airlines!

Re: jazz pilots pay the mortgage off fast
The question I have here is what is the time-line for the implementation of the 3rd and final stages of the Canada-EU aviation agreement?
The 2nd stage will already allow foreigners to own 49% of Canadian carriers and at 3rd stage:
The 2nd stage will already allow foreigners to own 49% of Canadian carriers and at 3rd stage:
I expect new, European capital to flow into the Canadian aviation industry (as well as capital crossing the "pond" the other way). So maybe, at some point in the future, Lufthansa Cityline or Flybe will be contracted. Of course, Jazz might be doing CDG-ZRH at that point too."once both sides enable investors to set up and control new airlines in each others' markets"--passenger airlines will be able to fly onward to third countries. The final stage would come "once both sides complete steps to allow the full ownership and control of their carriers by the others' nationals," and would provide carriers "full rights to operate between, within and beyond both markets, including between points in the territory of the other party," a set of rights known as cabotage.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to see that happen. It'll be interesting to see the developments of all the domestic flying for AC as the cost cutting goes into overdrive. When the Embraers are gone I wonder if the Airbus flying will be next. Interesting developments, thanks for sharing

No doubt your stupid posting was to create some sort of response. You got a few suckers. A more likely scenario would be Jazz taking over all or most of the domestic travel when you knobs go bankrupt again. Looking forward to it!

As somebody not associated with either side of this, it seems only common sense that the CPA will go to the lowest bidder in the future. The Sky Regional deal seems to be the start of it. There is also nothing stopping AC from having different partners covering different regions. Before the merger there were 4.
Who owns Jazz' aircraft? Jazz? AC? leased? If either of the latter two, they could easily be transferred to a new operator.
For me the biggest reason that Jazz is not a career airline is that they effectively only have one customer. If that customer decides to go elsewhere, Jazz pretty much ceases to exist.

I don't know much about CPA deals, or scope clauses, or Jazz/AO/AirBC/AirNova issues; I do know that the original piece of advice is valid no matter where, or who, you work for:
would be very wise for all [jazz] aviators to pay down as much of ur personal debt asap

Re: jazz pilots pay the mortgage off fast
I am often amazed at the joy some people here project when discussing the possibility that other's may be put out of work. You may not like company X, Y, or Z for whatever reason but, every time one of those companies go under, we all lose. Your friends, in some cases family, and co-workers are out of a job. Sure, some of those jobs go elsewhere but usually at a lower wage. That drag affects you every time you ask for a raise in your current job. The bosses pull out the phrase "industry standard" and that means less.
Don't be so ready to rub your hands and lord your superiority when your fellow pilots suffer loss, instead you should show concern that they may be coming for your job next.
We're all pilots here (well a lot of us), and we all do the same job. Fly the plane, fix the plane, or what have you. Let the marketing guys and management fight the fights between companies. Let us recognize that what benefits one of us manages to eventually benefit all of us. And just in case you weren't aware, the management of these companies all know each other and often socialize outside of work.

I agree with everything you said and I hope that most here would also agree.

As a matter of fact as a 5 year employee of Jazz I make more than the average canadian (look it up) so I can pay off my mortgage quite quickly, though my SUV payment, my trips in the last year to Australia, paris, barbadosx2, etc has been hampering it lately.
PS I live in NW YYC in a 5 year old house I bought new.
Life truly is a bitch
PS My wife make significantly less than me and we have 2 kids.

"Mach 1" I couldn't have said it better myself.
What many in this industry cannot grasp is that when the floor goes down, so do you. Unless you're wearing hover boots of course but since they havn't been invented yet down you go. Lowest bidder sounds good at first but that tether ball will come back and hit you in a couple years.

How far are we willing to let the industry slide?

Were you preaching that with Thomascook?
Re: jazz pilots pay the mortgage off fast
YES
By maintaining status pay at Jazz EVEN for the 757 operation we were able to have pay equity and therefore improve quality of life for all pilots on all types and not just those 30 on the '57.
If you need a lesson in status pay please feel free to browse AvCanada as it's been explained many MANY times. If you'd like I'll summarize:
X DHC8 wages + Y CRJ wages + Z 757 wages /total pilots = wages paid to all pilots
The math is pretty simple and so is the choice. If you don't like having to change types to get a raise, flying a plane based on schedule and personal choice rather than pay cheque and less competition and elitism among the pilot group than Jazz is the place for you. If not, feel free to apply somewhere else. Not to mention the savings in training costs due to less pilot movement.
If you wanna talk about lowering the bar to save money, just talk to AC and their choice of Sky Regional to fly out ot YTZ. Start up airline, no pension, all on first year pay scales, unknown benefits and non unionized.
It's pretty clear that we are not the ones lowering the bar but funny enough the author of this thread (and AC apparently) finds Jazz too expensive and other cheaper alternatives should be found. Yup, we must be the ones dragging this industry down.
I know it's a troll but I can't help myself

Re: jazz pilots pay the mortgage off fast
I understand the status pay, but I'm not too sure that I agree with it....especially when dealing with such a wide range of aircraft....sure you have the highest paid Dash8 captains in the world, but also the lowest paid 757 captains....there's got to be a better compromise in there somewhere?
