Obviously not. You know nothing about how a minority government functions. Or doesn't.
Oh please. There's a difference between how a minority government functions with a strong opposition and one with a weak opposition. I'll give you five guesses which one Harper has been operating as. If you need more I'll give you as many chances as you need.

Okay okay. He probably hugs his kids when he sends them off to school now instead of shaking their hand. That's a huge step on the road to becoming human.

While I am still concerned for Niss and his unusual interst in the taste of politicians' colons, he does make a valid point that I think both Hedley and Rockie missed, though when I read both your posts I get a flashback to my teen years and arguments at parties..Outside boys...

Anyway, from the mouth of the babe it was said....I understand the political process and will vote for an MP...True words. The media has always tried to make it a personalized "race" to the point of making election night results look like some type of race with x leading by a nose...etc. And, when I read this personalization of leaders it makes me think the media has succeeded.. Last I heard there was some 300 plus MPs forming the government and all you guys post about, for the most part, is the leaders ( I note a few exceptions), but everyone is going to have some faults and those faults are going to be exaggerated by the media and listened to and repeated by the believers of one side or another...Lowest common denominantor.

And in the interest of full disclosure, I think everyone should know that Rockie is not posting from the cockpit, which co-incidently, is 100% dead kitten free, and Hedley is not secretly planning to require all ppl students to have Pitts time before they get a license issued.

Do you guys really think you are going to influence the other to change their mind. Or anyone elses for that matter?

Nah, this is just good natured bantering back and forth.

It used to be in a parliamentary democracy that you voted for your MP who went off to Ottawa to represent your interests. But that process started to change a number of years ago and really got completely subverted during the Chretien years. Now MP's only serve to elect a government that is ruled completely by the PMO's office. Even cabinet ministers these days have no power compared to many non-elected staffers and advisors in the Prime Minister's office. We have a parliamentary system in name only.

So now when we vote we have to superimpose the party leader's face and name overtop the local candidates. Because once that local individual gets to parliament he/she has fulfilled their purpose and will likely not be heard from again until the next election.

These sort of major “scandals” are that which only political hacks and journalists seem to care about. The average voter doesn’t care about a Cabinet member scribbling a note on an official piece of paper; they care about lower taxes, greater individual freedom, and government backing off. The same thing happened a few years ago when former Cabinet Minister Maxime Bernier (still a Montreal Member of Parliament) had his own controversy regarding confidential documents being kept at his girlfriend’s house. Did it hurt him or the government? Not at all. When Natural Resources Minister Lisa Raitt left a binder with confidential documents at a news outlet, the hacks and journalists went wild. The voters didn’t care. What they care about is: Who will give me more freedom, who will allow me to keep more of the money I earn, who will allow me to remain more secure, who will roll back the nanny state that's been constructed?

I agree with Rockie, in many ways, Canada is a country without freedom. When I look at the United States, I see what Canada should and used to be: A nation centered on freedom and democracy, with a people who tell the government how it’s going to be, as opposed to bowing down at the feet of their legislators and surrendering liberty. Fellows like Niss are too young to know what has been lost.

Voters have to choose which party will put us on the road back to where we used to be. The Cons are not perfect, but I believe our best hope. If they fail to deliver, then it will be time for a tea party North.

I still don't believe how people can think Harper is a dictator when if he had a majority government, there would have been no quick elections and no proroguing of parliament, because unless he got his own party riled up there would have been absolutely no opportunity force him to do so by the opposition. That's how the Liberals operated until we as the voters punished them (as well as the Mulroney PCs).

MPs are lawmakers. If the current opposition gets in and doesn't like proroguing of parliament or calling elections of convenience, they should introduce a bill to change that. But you won't see it happen. You will see Paris Hilton win a Pulitzer Prize first.

Just remember these fundamental facts:

-NO party can please all of the people.
-NO party is free of scandal.
-NO party is free of mistakes.
-NO party truly has the interests of their constituents ahead of their personal agendas.

The only thing Iggy or Jack have going for them is they haven't been in a position to really do any damage.

When I read the thread title I was worried that there may be a kitten shortage for my favorite recipes. (Chicken go meow, being my favorite).

And what is about? Well, I am not sure. Paranoia of the left? Pro-butter rhetoric? Childhood proteges?
