The pilot, Jason Maloney of Cornwall, N.Y., later told the police that he had gotten the idea from a television program called “Flying Wild Alaska” that depicted rough landings.

He and his two passengers, Clarke Oler, 22, and Chelsea Protter, 21, started out of Stewart International Airport, just west of Newburgh, N.Y., and landed at Republic Airport in Farmingdale, on Long Island, before taking off again on Monday evening, said Paul J. Browne, a police spokesman.

Mr. Maloney soon requested permission to cruise along the Rockaways shore and sounded quite relaxed, even uncharacteristically so by pilot standards. Twice, upon receiving authorization to fly below 500 feet along the shoreline, the pilot replied, “Roger,” but stretched it out and pronounced it, “rod-jaaah,” according to the recording. He also told the controller, who was nearby at Kennedy Airport monitoring outgoing flights, “Just let us know if we’re up in your grill, you know?”

A short while later, Mr. Maloney presented his next idea to the controller.

“Hey tower, I’ve got a question for you,” he said. “This might be crazy, but are we allowed to land on the beach?”

“I don’t think so, unless it was an emergency,” the controller replied. The recording was posted to the Web by LiveATC.net, which tracks air communications.

“I’m a paramedic,” Mr. Maloney said. “Is there anybody I can ask?” (Mr. Maloney is studying medicine at Georgetown University; his grandmother, Helen Maloney, 82, called him “the most wonderful person that I know” and said he builds homes for Habitat for Humanity.)

The controller told him that all the beaches are public and that only emergency landings would be allowed. Mr. Maloney asked if there were any private beaches nearby, and the controller said he did not believe so.

Mr. Maloney then had another concern: “You know, tower, my engine might be running a little, teensy, teensy bit rough. A little teensy bit rough.”

The controller asked if he needed help, and Mr. Maloney said, “You know what, we should be fine, but I’m going to make a precautionary landing. Is that all right with you?”

First time I heard the recording I was dead sure this guy was stoned.

Second time around, he just sounds like a huge moron. Speaking as someone who has puked in a Piper Warrior twice, a "sick" passenger is no reason to put down on a beach. Sounds like a lame excuse for stupid stunt. Fortunately for him, neither he or passengers were injured.

Unfortunately for us in the broad aviation community, natural selection did not prevail. (only partially kidding on that last point)

I don't know. Aren't the flight schools the retarded ones who teach you to do a precautionary if you have a sick passenger.

In the south part of Canada and the US, you can land at a real airport by the time you do a full precautionary. In the north part of Canada, you will get help anywhere from a week to a month sooner if you simply divert to the closest airport. I'm sure they could have made JFK if they simply declared an emergency.

The single-engine aircraft's owner, a Delaware company called Plane Nonsense, removed its wings and had it taken to Boston on the back of a flat-bed truck Tuesday, an FAA spokesman said.

In Boston, the engine will be disassembled and examined by an FAA-approved mechanic.

"He's going to look at everything to determine why that engine was reported to be running rough by the pilot," said FAA spokesman James Peters.

Unless its on the kid's dime (or daddy's), why waste the money. It seems pretty clear the kid was looking for any excuse to be allowed to land the plane on the beach without consiquences so he had to make up an engine issue.

If it's only running a little teensy, teensy, teensy, teensy, teensy, teensy... bit rough, probably no need to run it into the surf.

The air-headed pilot who made a dubious emergency landing on a Rockaways beach was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday.

Jason Maloney, 24, had been holed up at his Cornwall, N.Y., home since his dramatic splashdown Monday night.

The joyriding flyboy was carried shoeless from his home in a chair by medical workers, who transferred him to a gurney and loaded him into an ambulance.

Maloney was experiencing seizures, an emergency worker said. He was taken to St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, N.Y., where he was being treated Wednesday night.

Maloney landed in shallow water Monday after telling air traffic controllers he had an engine running "a little teensy, teensy bit rough."

He also said he had a sick passenger and a pastor aboard on a "medical mission."

Website LiveATC.net posted an audio recording of Maloney's bizarre radio interaction with flight officials. In it he cracks jokes and offers baffling, conflicting reasons for wanting to land.

Maloney had two passengers aboard and was on a round-trip flight from Republic Airport in Farmingdale, L.I.

The Federal Aviation Administration is still investigating the incident. If Maloney's claim of engine trouble turns out to be baloney, he could face a fine and loss of his pilot certificate.

Before Maloney was rushed to the hospital, his father, John Maloney, 58, insisted his son would not speak to reporters until the FAA finished its probe.
