I see Toronto Airways has a Job posting for 8 new instructors.
Can anyone comment on how they are as an employer?

Is there any particular reason why they are looking for so many at one time?

How many hours do instructors/new hires typically fly per year?

Their current booking-system shows 28 instructors. Maybe some are quitting for real jobs???

The fleet is ten C150s, eight older C172s, two newer 172s, and six assorted Pipers.

How many instructors does it take?

28 instructors for 26 A/C isn't a bad ratio as long as you have the student base. I'd hate to be an instructor there in the winter when everyone is looking for a new student. Not too sure what would be worse...looking for a student or David Miller

Have at'er boys. That is one busy airport and school. U will log some good time in the summer. as far as the winter, all FTU's are pretty hurttin. But that one still has a good deal of action goin on. I think the reason that they are looking for so many is that the industry is actually satrting to move. Imagine that. Who would have guessed? I have never worked there, but I would say one of the highlights of working there is the managment. I encourge all to apply.

I heard they go through lots of people because they treat the pilots like idiots or kids. The upper management CP and ASSistant CP have some issues. No one in charge has ever flown the line in the real world....career instructors with attitude. Also heard TC was investigating training issues there. Its a lot of the old boys school syndrome. That's what I've heard from alot of past and present instructors. You'll also need to get a part time job to pay your bills and food. Planes are tired and worn out.

Hey Bandit, those in glass houses should not throw stones. Last I checked LCE was being looked at pretty closely by TC because of your little prop strike "oversight". I guess you are a pretty popular guy at YKZ from the stories I have heard. Anyhow, I am curious as to why a guy with all of your experience and aviation knowledge would still be flying a single engine. But then, who I am to criticize.

Well put Phattts. The industry is starting to move, butch. But we won't argue with u if you want to stay at home and procrastinate(sp). As for some of the instructors there, they have moved on to H&L, Voyager etc. And as far as your comment about the CP and Ass CP at TAL, try CFI. They great people to work with. If your treated likea little kid, or an idiot, there is a reason.

I would also have to Agree with Bandit, TAL is the shadiest operation out there. Not just the flight school but the whole Family/company. Their CFI is a Ex Cop, cant find his head from his you know what, and forsure has no idea about how things work, the way they should work, and how to be a CFI. He was just another puppet picked out by the sifton family. Saying that just think what kind of operation are you going to have if the leader can't even operate himself. They do have a decent size fleet with amazing maintenence personel but it is the lack of funding and the people running the show that make it a piss poor flight school. Why go TAL when you can goto Cdn Flyers at Markham and actually learn to fly and teach at a place where the workers know the ropes and know what the game is about and how to play it. Just leave that in the back of your head when you are applying for a $7.00/hr instructing job at Scareways.

ok, having worked at TAL recently I can tell you that its not as bad as some claim it to be. Yes, like any other companies it has its setbacks, but for a class IV looking to build hours and not have to fight over students, its a great place. Really guys, be careful how you interperet what you read on Avcanada; some people think that fishing for students here by slandering the competition will get them somewhere.

As far as taking a cheapshot at the CFI, well, that poster just proved that he doesn't know his ass from his elbow. Really its ridiculous that anyone would take a crack at him. He is an awesome guy that stands up for his employees and has turned the company around from its shady reputation (which, BTW, WAS the way things were there, but not anymore thanks to the CFI). Problems with Transport? Just CALL them and ask them how TAL did in its last audit, the results may surprise a few of you here.

Guys, if you were interviewed at TAL and are worried about what you're getting into, let me spell it out for you.

1) To make money you have to work your ass off. Its on a bonus system so the more you work, the higher your wage is for the month

2) The people you are going to work with are awesome people that come from all walks of life and will truly inspire you and change you for the better. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

3) Upper management has had some history with the employees that you want to stay away from. Get out of the politics, and you won't be stricken with the pathetic whining disease that has plagued far too many Avcanada posters.

There is no other school I can think of where the instructors are turning down students so that they can focus on the ones they already have. Believe me, its a great place to build your PIC time, and outside the instructing world, its priceless.

Gotta weigh in on this one.

The cheap shots at TAL's CFI are unwarranted. Hoser is right, the recent TC audit went extremely well, largely due to the work of this individual. Like or dislike, it is still a fact.

Other facts; hourly pay is slightly below GTA average, flying is plentiful, promotions are handed out objectively, act like an adult and you will be treated as one, and the amount of work you will be asked to do for free is exactly none.

They've taken the contract for flight training Algonquin College's aviation program, though not sure if it'll run yet. If it does, it'll be out of Buttonville for a few months, then probably to Pembroke (near Ottawa). Could be preparing for that?
