Headset
I'm going to Algonquin College in May and need a headset. Any ideas of where to get one in the Southwestern Ontario area (pref around Guelph) and what are some good ones?
Thanks,
JB
Thanks,

Re: Headset
You want to buy it from Calgary Pilot supply. They helped me multiple times in multiple locations around Canada. come to think of it I have yet to step foot in the store.

Re: Headset
Just be sure to get the best one you can afford. You only have one set of ears and for $1000 you should protect them from hour 1. Seeing as you are going to a college I am going to assume that you are doing this for a career.

Re: Headset
Lightspeed Zulu. Get noise canceling now because you'll regret it later if you don't. Bose is grossly overpriced compared to its competitors in every one of their products.

Re: Headset
I've been looking at headsets online and I've noticed that there are different models for say a David Clark or even the Zulus. Once I choose which brand how do I go about selecting a model?

Re: Headset
Do a search around here for Head Set there are pile of reviews from pilots. For my 2 cents, the Telex Stratus 50D.

Re: Headset
I just bought myself a Lightspeed Sierra at Threshold Aviation, which is hundreds less than a Zulu, but from what I can tell gets very similar performance. I'm looking forward to trying it out tomorrow on a flight!
Re: Headset
If you're a young pup, you want two things from a headset. Noise reduction, and durability.
If you're an old dog, already too deaf to waste money on top end stereos, you want two things. Light weight and durability.
I wouldn't save a few bucks on the "cheaper" model. If you're staying in this business, your headset is going to take a crap kicking.
Buddy has a top of the line DC with the ENR...hates it. Nothing but problems.
The Lightspeed Zulu? I know three guys who absolutely swear by these. I tried one. Way better than the Bose (which I think is overpriced and living on their reputation)
Me? I love my DC 13.4...but I'm already..pardon....say again...,so the light weight 13.4 is all I need.
Caveat.....if you wear glasses....even sunglasses. Try the headset on with the glasses.

Re: Headset
Don't get too too crazy with spending large on a headset...I'm still kicking it old school and my hearing is just fine.

Great headset for half the price. I love mine. And you can use it with your iPod when deadheading, or studying in your case.

Re: Headset
Lightspeed Zulus.
A couple of caveats though. One, bring extra batteries. Mine last around 50 hours, but the passive isn't all that great. Two, keep the tunes down. Not just so you can hear the radio, but to save your eardrums. Noise cancelling doesn't do much for loud music.

Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

Here is a link for an ANR tutorial from Lightspeed:

It might help.

Re: Headset
For a noisy environment the Telex 50d's are the best I've tried. Extremely comfortable. Unfortunately expensive. A friend of mine actually brought me 4 different noise cancelling headsets a few years back {DC, Bose etc.} and I flew them all one after the other, then I flew with some 50ds and the difference was astonishing. My original pair (10 years old) recently gave up the ghost (one ear now making a racket) so I just bought a new pair and will have the old ones repaired.
If you are really strapped for cash you can modify an el-cheapo Peltor with an Headsets Inc. ANR kit for a hundred bucks and it works as well as most everything except the Telex 50Ds.

I also highly recommend this model! Attractive and affordable. Only problem is you can't fly single-pilot IFR with themI WAS Birddog wrote:Don't get too too crazy with spending large on a headset...I'm still kicking it old school and my hearing is just fine.

Seriously though you can't really be using those??

Re: Headset
Hey if you have the $$$ go with the ANR you won’t regret it!
However, if your broke and don’t feel like dishing out $1000 for a headset - maybe give this a shot!

I use it, comfortable, affordable… I have had no problems with it! (best of all it does not look like the DC's).
ANR is wonderful but if you’re just training and flying a 172 for 3 hours a week it's not as imperative as if you were flying on the some beast for 9 hours straight everyday!

Re: Headset
X2 on the beyerdynamics, I have the HS 400 and just got the HS600 DANR, the 400 worked great for the price. The 600 I like more than the bose, the noise cancelation is better and I can buy 2 pairs for the price of 1 bose. I recomend any of the Beyerdynamic line.
Re: Headset
Ask me about my old $120 ASA HS-1s sometime. Just be sure you ask loudly,
Re: Headset
Yep. Have the Headsets Inc ANR kit installed in my old DC 13.4s... I think the kit is excellent, though I've only used the one ANR headset (well, other than Bose QC3 headphones flying as pax, but that's an entirely different thing). Time has been limited primarily to light piston singles.
Excellent customer service - when 1 1/2 yrs old, contacted them about an intermittent electronic ticking in one earcup, on a kit I'd installed myself. Sent in the headset with CC # included and a paper authorizing charges up to $100 to repair, and to contact me if authorization required for higher dollar value rapir, and requesting a new mic muff, to be charged to CC. Received back promptly with one earcup module replaced out of warranty and new mic muff, with no charge.....
Cheers,
Colin

Re: Headset
If you are in Guelph, go see Hammond Aviation at Kitchener Waterloo airport, first building on the right side of the terminal.
Your other options are Aviation World in Toronto on Carlingview, or Threshold Aviation on the north side of YYZ.
My advice, buy online only after you have tried the actual model on your head first. Make sure that the heaset fits comfortably on your mellon.
Buying headsets is like buying underwear.

Re: Headset
The BEYERDYNAMIC head phones seems to be a pretty good product for the price....I wonders if the're some pilots using them who could comment furthermore..
