Re: Tailwheel Checkout In Ontario?

Post by Soupy »

I just began flying tailwheel aircraft myself, I went through the Brampton flight centre on their Super Cub, its a good plane, I had excellent instruction there, and now I am looking really just to fly some different types and build some hours. Here are some of the websites for the different places I found.

http://www.bramptonflightcentre.com/
http://www.futureair.ca/
http://www.spectrumairways.com/
http://www.learntofly.on.ca/index.htm

Hope that helps.

Starting last summer, 3Point Aviator has been operating out of Guelph Airpark.
They are doing excellent taildragger checkouts and rentals.
Their rates are fantastic and beat out anyone in Ontario.
Glenn is a really great guy , give him a call.

Thak you SO much fleet16b, I have been flying a Citabria a little bit, and did get a couple flights in the Canuck at St. Thomas; but Three Point looks perfect! I've always wanted to fly a J3. I'm going to see my brother in about a week (U of G) so I'll have to check it out.

FYI
The Rockcliffe Flying Club in Ottawa at the aviation museum will be starting to do tail wheel checkouts and aerobatics training in a Decathlon. They just got the plane, they are just sorting out some paperwork before it is officially online.

I am also quite excited about that, however, I believe it is a super Decathlon, I could be wrong. Last I heard they would have it up and running in may some time. I know that there there was talk about doing floats and skis on it in the distant future.

I think you're right about it being the super decathlon.

I don't know much about it, someone from Rockcliffe had said that to me a while back, maybe they meant on a different plane, I don't. In any case it would be in the distant future if it did happen, but more than likely mis-understood, my apologies if that turns out to be the case.

I brought the Super Decathlon over to Rockcliffe from Nixon (CNX8) on 14 April, as soon as the import process was completed. My first time at Nixon, 1800' grass strip near Brantford. Nice place, the grass was great for a few practise circuits before the 3 hour flight back to Ottawa.

It's a cute little 2002 Super Decathlon, C-GKXD. A very easy aeroplane to 3-point, quite docile for a tailwheel aeroplane. It's tied down beside the clubhouse waiting for space to open up in the hangar. It really should be stored indoors.

None of the full-time instructors had much tailwheel PIC time, especially backseat PIC time, so I've been taking a few of them up. We should also have some aerobatic instructors current on it soon. The recent weather has caused a few cancellations and delays.

I'll be running the tailwheel training programme initially, and Mark Braithwaite will be running the aerobatics programme. It should be fun for everyone. The Club was hoping to get the paperwork finished and have the aircraft ready to start tailwheel and aerobatic training on 01 May. Simon (CFI) will have the latest word on when things can officially get underway.

Yeah I'll do a checkout if there is a need. It will depend on the field conditions as I'm on a grass runway. There are lots of airports around for the actual training but I'll need to get in/out of my home strip. I'll be putting my skis on once we have the conditions for it.

Send me a PM

I’m based at CYND

Any chance you're still doing any tailwheel training? Just finishing my PPL and would love to do some tailwheel hours for the experience.
