iPad vs. a Laptop?
Why do I ask? My wife is looking at replacing her laptop (PC) with an iPad. I have a MacBook Pro, and she's thinking she can get by with an iPad and her present laptop. I think she should go straight into the MacBook Pro.
Why do I ask here....on avCanada? Because I know most of you are under 30, brought up with computers, and know all this shit!
What will a computer do an iPad will not? Other than the lack of USB ports.

Re: iPad vs. a Laptop?
iPad has no keyboard which could get tiring very quickly with a lot of typing. Lack of multiple users on the iPad (though we don't bother with multiple user accounts on our home computer anyways). The lack of support for USB devices and needing to hook it up to a computer to do many things with it would be the biggest annoyances I would have.
Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

I'm thinking an iPhone, which we're both going shopping for this week will cover most of the iPad bases. I'm I out in left field on this thought?

It will do 90% of what the iPad will do but with a smaller screen. Plus you won't need to get another service plan to use cell networks. iPads are great but you have to lug them around, whereas the iPhone fits in your pocket and it is always handy. Nothing like Googling how to snowboard as you are heading up the lift.Doc wrote:I'm thinking an iPhone, which we're both going shopping for this week will cover most of the iPad bases. BTW, I am 32, so I don't know if my answers qualify.

Re: iPad vs. a Laptop?
My plan is to ditch my current laptop.. but in favor of a new way of doing things. It gets tiring using the iphone to actually browse the web for anything important... like reading the national enquirer like posts on Avcanada
as the screen is small.. but thats not to say I dont loive my iphn!
I'll be going this route.. 27' iMac for the house.. and an iPad to throw into the backpack/flightbag for the basics that I do away from home.. web surfing, games, notes etc etc. I dont exactly NEED a laptop for all of that jazz, especially when I've got a nice big screened desktop at home with gobs of goodness and power.
I wouldnt however use the iPad as a replacement for an all around computer.. which is what my current laptop sees service as.

Lack of dvd/blu ray player in the iPad and also the lack of flash are the main differences for me and what I use them for. As Pie mentioned, typing on the virtual keyboard is a pain in the ass if typing long pieces with the iPad especially if you need to cut and paste etc. I have a laptop, iPad and blackberry. I like certain features of each of them so I continue on with all 3

Well, we scampered out this morning and picked up a couple of iPhones. It's going to be an interesting weekend getting to know the thing! But, we have 4" of new snow, so there's really little else to do.
So, now I have made a major commitment to the Apple Co. Our house computer has croaked. IMac on the shopping list. The old tower will become a spare anchor!

Re: iPad vs. a Laptop?
I have had a iPad for a year now and love it! I hardly use my MacBook except to do heavy-duty word-processing and other technical jobs. Most of my computer work is email or web based and the iPad is great for that. When I'm traveling on the road, it is nice to not be lugging my MacBook in my flight bag! Plus with 10-12 hour battery life it tends to last for a couple of days on a charge. Just my $0.02.

We develop for both Mac and Windows...
I've been working professionally with PCs for... well... almost 2 decades now?
My go to computer is the Mac.
I only use the PC when I absolutely have to.
Just sayin'

Buy her an iPod and she will dance around listening to the music.
Buy her an iPad and she will smile and give you a kiss
Buy her an iRon and you will get a black eye
